I'll be turning 18, which means it will be "Class-D-Day" for me (for those in ny) which allows me to legally drive in NYC, and drive by myself without restrictions! (Not that I haven't been doing that for a year or anything. Shhhh)

Happy almost birthday dude! Does that rule only apply to driving in the city? I've never heard of that...

Thanks! Yep. When you get your class DJ "driving license" (not learners permit; after your road test) you are explicitly prohibited from driving in NYC under any circumstances, accompanied by an adult or not. The law is really messed up and I find this ridiculous.

That is pretty lame, although I'm sure you've never broken that rule... :)

Of course not! That would be so unlawful of me...

You're coming up on that too though, aren't you Scoob? Or are you already NYC-approved?

I'm turning 18 in August, which will take forever.

I was told by several state officials at the DMV that you can drive with a properly licensed adult.

The law here seems to disagree with you...

Once an individual has taken their road test and received their DJ or MJ License they may no longer drive within the five boroughs of New York City under any circumstances.

It is advised that Junior Permit holders, who consistently drive in New York City, delay their road test until their 18th birthday in order to allow for continued practice driving with approved supervising drivers in vehicles with dual controls (dual brakes). Please see the restrictions for Junior Permit for more information.

Ah, gotcha. I didn't remember if you were older or younger than me. 18 is much less of a fanfare than you'd think. I haven't even bought my celebratory lottery ticket yet, and it's been a couple months. You will have to register for the draft, though - that tends to be important for college stuff.

I remember the feeling that december 26th of last year, and that day in January where I took my road test, and remembering how long this day would take to arrive...

You're the kind of person if I met them in real life I would punch them in the face.
