Here in Colorado we enjoy many, many days of sun and dry weather (well, not today, but normally). Said days are still often pretty cold, but lend themselves to track days otherwise.

Winter tires work beyond just their tread pattern - they use rubber compounds that improve performance even on dry pavement as long as the weather hits a certain temperature (or colder).

So how about this - a tire with winter rubber compounds but with a summer tread pattern?

Solution: Worn out winter tire with the tread worn down.

I had the same idea back when the winter vs. all-season debate was going on. The only time I really drive on snow is if it happens to snow just before or during the morning and evening rush hours. So for me a tire with a regular tread pattern, but made with a winter compound would be ideal.

Isn't that what most of the performance winter tires are but with added siping?

Nokian's now marketing "all weather" tires in addition to their normal winter tires.

They plow the roads so well here in Colorado we've used all seasons on all of our cars the past 3 years with zero problems. That includes trips to Breck.

Problem with that is the winter compound only goes about halfway through the tread's depth. I suppose it makes the tires last longer before they're totally finished off...

That's the problem, though. The siping is immensely helpful in snow and on more slick situations, but I can only see it leading to excessively fast tire wear when you put a lot of g forces on it, and eventually chucking chunks of the tread blocks...

Even all-season tires do this. Example in the track section of this Motorweek Theater video:
