you know, Im a dog person and not particularly evil or prone to evil deeds, but I've always wondered why this works. Dogs aren't that tough or heavy and it seems to me like if you had a gun, or were determined to do evil things that it wouldn't be hard to fight off a single dog.
*Story time* I love dogs as a disclaimer
I've personally witnessed a dog about that size be killed...by hand. This crazy guy was trying to get me and a colleague away from his property (we were going door to door, but happy to leave this man alone) and as we were leaving his stuck is dog on us. My colleague happened to be a 300 lb Tongan (born and raised in Tonga) and as it jumped at him, he simple grabbed it by the throat, then the back, flipped it over, broke its back and threw it to the ground and said "We eat this where I come from" and then walked away. Coincidentally the most badass thing I've ever seen in my life

Sounds like Tongans love dogs, too.

I have never heard about Tongans where they weren't either crazy or badasses. Thin line in there somewhere

its true. We had another one, 120 lbs and 5'7 of the toughest little fighter in the world. Quiet, shy and could toss me like a ragdoll. Did his own tatoos with a knife and some pen ink when he was 12.

It is extremely hard to hit a fast moving target heading toward you with a small profile. You have to stay calm and breathe slowly. In situations like that, the shooter is completely panicked. Also, the dog was well below his line of sight when it was close.
Also, if the bad guy is distracted by the dog, it gives the LEOs a chance to move into position, since the dog is the immediate threat.

I think it's partly the flinch, too. There are throws that lock up joints and the person goes flying, but it's not all the strength of the person throwing, it's the other person avoiding the lockup "arm tearing out of socket" that's helping.
Predator at neck with teeth? *evasive action!*
Tongan's, yeah. Got Samoans here like that, too. Got a story of one local guy, a big guy, doing some native plant studies with a biologist I worked with. They were hiking, and came across a beautiful little orange tree, with fruit on it. The trunk was about an inch and some, and it was just a perfect little thing (biologist speaking). Yes non-native, but hey. Local guy looked it, reached down, said "Fucking weed", and pulled.it.straight.outa.the.ground, tossed it over the hillside and strode on.

So glad this didn't turn into a flood of the reciprocal "I wish I could do this" gifs of dogs....
