Toyobaru or Fiesta ST - Which you would rather own?

Hello Oppo!

Toyota and Ford have both recently released global vehicles for us car geeks. They're both cheap to buy, rather cheap to run, have similar horsepower and were created to put a smile on your face, you little hoon!

I've been looking at both cars and both seem to make sense. The GT-86 is probably a bit more driver-oriented and offers a "purer" driving experience thanks to it being a rear-wheel drive coupe, naturally aspirated, and a dedicated sports car.

The fiesta ST is probably a bit more of a compromise, since it's derived from a classical hatchback and is front wheel drive. This also means means its format offers more seating space, a neat and easy to modulate trunk, all in a lighter and shorter package. In addition, its 1.6 turbo offers better fuel economy and more low-end grunt. And it's quite a bit cheaper, too.

In Europe, if you're a greedy lad like me looking for the cheapest route, you can get a GT-86 starting around 23 500€. On the other hand, a Fiesta ST can be had for as low as 16 500€, which makes quite a difference!

I'm not the only one who asked himself this question, since Evo recently did a comparison between two cars:

As you can see, the outcome's a bit surprising!

So, all things considered, if it were your money, which would you rather have?

I would pay the extra for the GT86 because it drives better and it more tunable.

And anyway, the FRS and BRZ are priced like a Focus ST.

Yep, but then you lose the practicality of the hatchback. Can't fit a mountain bike or your Ikea stuff in the GT86.

Crap, that's a very valid point! Though the Focus ST is in another dimension in terms of sheer speed.

We don't get the Fiesta ST as 5 door on our side of the pond though. 3 doors only.

Also, our Focus ST gets a full-size spare tire! That, along with the 4-door Fiesta ST, and yay we're finally getting the better versions on our side :)

If the Focus ST was somehow rwd I think that would change a lot.

I would take the FieSTa before the Focus ST in a second though.

How often do you go to Ikea? You can rent a pickup truck for like 25 bucks for a couple hours. In terms of mountain bikes though...I really want to weld a trailer hitch to my mustang for a rack, because those ones that strap to the trunk look like they are hell on the bodywork.

I don't think its really a valid comparison. I dont think the cars are similar at al, but I'd go Toyobaru. Maybe its the fat dumb Merican in me, but I'm just not a fan of front drive hatch backs.

Europe? Europe where? I gotta visit! Seriously. Locally Fiesta ST is 19.590€ while a GT-86 goes for 31.800€ :(

Considering I just looked at those as brand new cars...

I'd take the Focus ST most of the time. BRZ if and only if you have another car to carry stuff around.

To be honest, I went extra crazy and didn't buy either of them. I bought a MINI instead.

That being said, for the money I think I'd rather have a Focus ST over the GT86.

So the first thing you have to do if you get an FR-S/BRZ is buy good tires. At least that's mechanically easy, unlike, say, adding a turbo, but it's pretty expensive too. So I wonder what's the real purpose of putting those high-mileage tires on a sports coupe? Don't give me that crap about "they make it handle worse for more drifting fun," that's the most ridiculous car manufacturer's excuse I ever heard. Maybe it has something to do with CAFE mileage?

Well if you go though an agent, you can greatly reduce the buy price. You'd have to go look for it in Germany though, but with such a price difference..

Though it I want to register it where I live, I'll have to pay the yearly displacement tax (250€), and the power tax (2 500€...)

I've fitted Ikea stuff in the FRS.

I've also fitted two full grocer carts of food in the FRS.

If there's a will, there's a way.

Maybe the car would have felt more frustrating with very grippy tyres, maybe even a bit under-powered. CAFE might have played a role there too..

Good point there. Why put constraints on your car for what's maybe 0.5% of their use?

I honestly think the Toyobaru is practical enough. The fiesta ST's just a tad better.

Yep, the Mini's are nice but they're another niche. A Cooper S costs a solid 4-5 000€ more than the fiesta.

Well they're both driver focused car of similar power to weight ratio. I think most Europeans would go for the Fiesta! Me? Well I already have a hot hatchback so the Fiesta might not be worth the change..

LLove my Fiesta ST. Its handling limits and driving dynamics are truely remarkable given the front wheel drive, sand the turbo torque makes it a laugh in traffic. Also seats 4 relatively comfortably, (five if you hate the middle rear passenger, or they are really tiny) carys six tires AND a passenger, and turns in nearly 40mpg on the highway if you drive "responsibly". I fucking love it.

The market for hot hatches is not in as much danger as the market for inexpensive rear wheel drive sports cars as far as I'm concerned, minus MX-5. Definitely Toybaru.

THIS. My mother leases a new car every three years or so. She insists on having the third row because she has two kids and the dog. The problem? Me and my sister are both college aged, have our own cars, and are never home. The dog won't move unless the couch is on fire. That third row hasn't been folded up on the last two leases we had, both GMC Acadias. (Acadii?) The worst part of it all? My dad has been pushing for a Volvo wagon instead, but is consistently shut down.
