What have you watched? There's good anime and there's shit anime. Shit anime tends to be the most popular anime and so most people see shit anime.

Honestly, I've seen a few movies that were regarded as generally good, like Spirited Away and a couple others, can't remember the titles now. They were good, if a little out there. I guess my big hang up is just that I have a hard time with serious animation. Comedy I don't mind, of course, but for me its hard to really appreciate whats happening and enter the "suspension of disbelief" with animated characters. Especially since I really enjoy the serious work that good actors put into their characters, in terms of body language, facial expression, and other non-verbal things. Not sure why I have these preferences, just seems to be something that happened to me along the way.

Spirited Away's style isn't for everyone. The director has a very peticular style. Would you be willing to try something? Find a series called Cowboy Bebop and then watch episodes 5&6. That's only about 40 minutes and if you dislike it then hey, that's your personal preference. Anime isn't for everyone and if you don't like it than there's nothing wrong with that. It's your preference.

Ehh, I couldn't find any official sites streaming it. However I found this one and it seems to be pretty good quality. Anyways click on the "English Dubbed" by episodes 5 and 6 to watch it. I hope you like it.

hm, I understand your explanation. With me, I've never had trouble being completely drawn into the world of a good anime and forgetting it's not live action. Obviously you don't have the complete spectrum of a good actor's trade on display. Instead the skills of a voice actor becomes even more important. And a director is just as important as in a live action. As long as writing, plot, character is strong, as long as the story is good, I find anime just as rewarding as live action.
