To get your car nice and warm before you get in, just start the car and turn the heat up all the way. Next, exit the vehicle and do at least 50 jumping jacks or some other type of strenuous cardiovascular exercise. The car will see this and will interpret your activity as encouragement, and will try extra hard to pump out some heat. If you decide to do some parkour or jogging, make sure you stay within the car's line of sight. It will give up if it thinks you're gone.
After about 30 minutes of this, the car will be nice and toasty inside.

On a serious note:
If it's cold outside and you want to warm up the inside of your car and defrost your windshield, turning off your heating/ventilation while your engine is cold so it heats up quickly is not a brilliant idea. Directing a stream of hot air on your ice cold windshield (instead of gradually warming it up) is a great way to crack it. You have been warned.

Sound travels into the car via the HVAC system. The headlights double as eyes. trust me, it knows what you are doing.

Derp, don't turn the heater on until the engine is already warm. Turning the heater on immediately after starting will make it take longer for the engine coolant to warm up, since it's moving through your heater core and that heater core is basically a radiator. Wait for normal operating temp, and then turn on the heat; you'll have hot air within seconds that way.

That's why to get the temperature up initially after engine warmup, you just use the foot heater mode. However, it is a great idea to NOT use defroster on a frozen windshield with a rapid temperature change like that.

But the jumping jacks part is still good advice, right?
