It's snowy and cold here in Madison right now. But when the weather's nice, we have some amazing back roads not too far outside of town. This is one of my favorite sections of them.

When you head West out of Madison, you get to a region called the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Most of Wisconsin is flat because it had been covered in glaciers, and the glaciers flattened out all the hills. But the Driftless Area is where the glaciers didn't get to, and there's actual terrain. So call this the...Driftlessring? All I know is it's 5.5 miles of awesome.

Some Google Street View images along the way...

I take a left here:

Which leads to my favorite section of the loop:

Kinja'd!!!

They call this Pleasant Valley Road for good reason, and here's my favorite kind of road sign:

Kinja'd!!!

Which leads to:

Now I just need to wait, oh, another 4-5 months until the scenery actually starts looking like this again.

We have some spectacular roads in NH.

Twisting turning roads, with some nice straights to test the legs of the car.

Even Mass has some, sharp hairpins, winding turns.

Maine is probably the best if you can fine a nice paved road though.

I love that area. When finals are over I will post a few of my favorite too.

Have you ever been north around Eagle River and Three Lakes? There is an unbelievably fun road called Highway X that really is a must drive. Every summer when I go up there, Highway X is the first place I go after unloading the luggage from my car.

I feel so spoiled.

This is my typical 180mi route that starts about 3 minutes from my house.

Highlight of some of the best spots (what you can't see is the massive elevation changes):

Most of my favorite spots are either just a couple of fun corners, or an area that would be no more than a short rally stage.

Damn, that's crazy. Clearly I need to be more ambitious with my mapping of my local twisties.

That looks fantastic. Here is a short stretch, about 1.2 miles - but the neat thing it's built on the side of a cliff, about 800' of elevation change up and down, and it's a wide one-way with no other potential of traffic. The kind of road they can't build anymore, far tighter switchbacks that the map shows. Mostly 2nd gear with a little of 3rd occasionally, wonderful for checking out latest suspension mod.

Edit...Why won't you display the map jpg...whatever..

Haven't been that far Up Nort. ;)

If/when I go north it's typically been to places like Door County or Elkhart Lake.
