Yup, people forget that this isn't anything new. The auto industry follows design trends. At the core of it all is also the fact that cars also fit the same type of functions, so they must have similar parts.

I made this argument a LONG time ago when people claimed the Corvette and Viper looked the same. Engineers will always continue seeking the peak of modern performance with the materials and technologies at their disposal. When all these manufacturers start seeking peak performance in the realm of aerodynamics, which is a constant, their results are going to eventually peak in about the same way, based on their similar limitations, regulations, and cultural surroundings.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves come auto-show season. Everyone has to point out that they're a genius because they think that this line on this car looks just like this line on another car. But it isn't. All cars are unique (Chinese excluded), and it's all just styling trends. No car has ever been totally unique. And I'd actually say that modern cars are the most unique ones in history, thanks to the ability to finally put concept-type design into production, and the de-regulation of sealed-beam headlights (meaning auto designers have stopped designing around square or round headlamps, meaning the car as a whole can be more unique). And while I think modern design is excessive and prefer design circa 2004 (when cars were meant to say that they were cars instead of designs hiding the lights or other bits of the car... de-automobilizing the auto), there are plenty of modern machines to drool over.

SVX would have an issue with that... better for distances with comfort, torque, and aerodynamics, better for variable climates and weather with AWD.

but doesn't look like a Fox Body mustang/Camaro/Daytona, so I'm not sure why you're bringing it up.

The 3rd gen Camaro's design has held up extremely well, I think. But in general I think modern cars look great and agree with some of the posts here that cars from all eras have loads of distinguishing features even if basic shapes and styles are similar due to the regulations and public taste at the time. I love how car design reflects many aspects of the times we live in and
it's interesting to see how competing products influence each other. I have love for all eras.

Because you brought up 'American GT car' in reference to a japanese-built machine, and it refers to a geographic location and role for a car, not a nameplate or specific aesthetic of a car.

an RX7 like that might say GT on the side, as lots of sport coupes do... it is more of a Sports Car than a Grand Tourer, regardless of resemblance or lack of it.

Not to say that I don't like FC-3S... it is one of my favorites, and I kind of prefer it as a little bit of an underdog to it's FD-3S successor, which is a bit expensive.

I'd love an FC-3S... but I think I would treat it more like a dedicated sports car for runabout and performance driving, than taking it on long trips.

OK... 80's era fastback sport coupes.

Let's fill out this list a bit more, since RX-7 has already been mentioned...

Mark II and Mark III Supras.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Mitsubishi Starion and Chrysler Conquest.

Kinja'd!!!

Nissan Z31 300ZX.

Kinja'd!!!

Mazda already mentioned.

Honda Accord coupe:

Kinja'd!!!

Audi coupes, urQuattro, and S2.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Isuzu Impulse:

Kinja'd!!!

Subaru Leone RX-II Turbo AWD.

Kinja'd!!!

Heck, BMW M1 didn't look all that far off, and it was mid-engined.

Kinja'd!!!

It was the way cars were built then. EVERY brand had one.

And pretty much all of them had rear hatches, at least one in the brand lineup, and sometimes more than one body-style... like Mustang, with a standard coupe option, or Chrysler's LeBaron sister to Daytona.

But where have all the fastback-hatch sport coupes gone?

Nissan Z remains. Almost no other coupes on the market anymore have a lift back hatch, and some of the brands mentioned here don't exist anymore, and some that are mentioned barely have had coupes in their lineups anymore at all.

A fastback-hatch body style makes for a fantastic, versatile sport coupe.... yet almost nobody does it anymore. Very sad.

I was identifying the similar design language of the RX7 and the 3 "All-American GT Cars" and strengthening the argument that all cars look the same. I was sure everyone knew that I was kidding when I suggested it was "American" and a "GT"

I apologize for the English language and how subtle humour does not translate well over the internet.
