Everytime I go to sears for a tool no one else has it's the only thing out of stock on the shelf. Every. Fucking. Time. /rant

Shop your way rewards are awesome!
Don't they have site-to-store too?

I haven't been to Sears for a tool in a while. I think I'm finally essentially tool-complete for the kind of work that I feel comfortable doing in my garage.
However, there was a year or so where I redeemed a LOT of shop your way rewards. I bought a lot of tools, and then they gave me several more. That was the year I was trying to get everything I needed before they shifted production to China. I got REAL familiar w/ all the Sears stores in Dallas county, digging through shelves for old stock.

Yep, the rewards are awesome. They won't be able to get the tool I need in until Wednesday, but I need it today!

Us too, we have everything we need. We successfully got the engine out of the car yesterday without a single tool/part run. Now we need a 2-1/8in socket and no where in town has one. /sadpanda

Getting a whole job done w/out a tool run is WAY satisfying, huh?
what requires 2 1/8? you working on a big ass diesel truck?

And there's no other Sears or Kmart around?

Wait - I thought new jobs were *only* done if they justified a new tool? #confused

I've justified THOUSANDS of dollars worth of new tool purchases by telling myself how much money I would save doing my own work :)

It's pretty awesome, and no, it's actually a 1.3L engine, I'll let you guess what kind. ;)

There's a kmart, but they don't have anything useful there. The closest sears besides the one in town is over an hours drive.

"Look dear, I saved $200!"
"That's nice, what did you buy?"
"Well, it was *only* $400."
"Uh huh."

Bingo! 2-1/8in flywheel bolt, put on at a good 350ft/lb.

Always. Happens. To. Me. If I really need the tool the next day, mcmastercarr.com.

I'd never thought to look there for tools... but holy balls batman, that's freaking expensive. Almost $50 for a socket, it's just over $20 for the craftsman one.

It is expensive, but if Harbor Freight, Sears, Ace, Lowes and the various auto parts stores don't have it and I need it now, that is what is left.

Very true. Luckily sears will have it Wednesday, so it's only one more day of waiting compared to McMaster.

BTW Amazon has alot of tools if you can take the time to wade the crap and you know what you want.

I've ordered a few things from Amazon before, and they seem to be about the same quality as the ones you pick up from the autoparts store, you get good ones and you get bad ones. We stripped the points off of a t-55 torx bit yesterday the first time we even tried to use it that was bought at the autoparts store.
I think I'm finally becoming an adult, I like things with warranty and quality. Although I'd rather have something of quality than just a warranty(ala Harbor Freight). It doesn't matter how many times you can take it back when you break it if none of them will get the job done.

I totally agree with you. The quality on Amazon is about equal to Harbor Freight unless you are buying a brand name, which there is some one there. I would also rather have an actual quality tool but sometimes it just doesn't make sense to spend the extra money and shipping when I am only going to use it once a year. That is what harbor freight is for. My 1/4 inch torque wrench comes to mind.

If you buy good tools, you'll only ever have to buy them once. A 1/4in torque wrench might not get used often, but I'd rather have my diff preloads spot on. ;)

For that, I would say spend the money, I used it for stage 1 of 3 of tightening an intake manifold.
