And I have to admit I either didn't know or forgot that the Hobbit was split into 3 movies.

How was it compared to the first film in regards to plot pacing? It seemed like with An Unexpected Journey the film was deliberately slow to space it out for 3 movies, is that the case with Desolation of Smaug?

Deliberately slow with a lot of embellishments

Me too! They easily could've done one epic movie

:| That kind of sucks. The first movie had such potential, but it felt so weighted down. Is it still worth the ticket price, or should one wait until a matinee showing when tickets are cheaper?

F that. Three gives them way more room to cover everything as is proper. If it were up to me, all book based movies would be 3 per book.

I didn't even know it was split up at all when I went to see the first movie, so about an hour and a half into it I just thought to myself that it was all moving rather slowly, until all of a sudden the credits started rolling...
It's interrsting that about 1000 pages pf LOTT were split into three, and the tiny by comparison Hobbit was also split into three.

We watched it in 3D HFR. It was beautiful, I'll give it that. More deliberate 3D "wow" effects than the first one, but not enough that it detracted from the experience. I don't know about seeing it right now, but when you do go make sure you get the 3D screening. It was weighted down, with plenty of side stories and plot devices that didn't exist in the book, but it was still a good watch. The Tolkien purist will be screaming fits, the movie fan will be enjoying at least most of the ride.

If they completely removed Evangeline Lilly and Orlando Bloom I would have enjoyed the movie MUCH more.

The Legolas/Tauriel thing really bothers me. Adding characters (one that doesn't exist in the Tolkien universe at all) is unnecessary for a movie that will ultimately be over two-and-a-half hours long. At some point you have to trim the fat, not add to it.

It was more the Tauriel/dwarf Twilight style romance. The fangirls in front of me in the theater squee'd so hard the girl sitting next to me told them to shut up. So awful.

Oh God the fangirls. During the first Hobbit film we had a group of Martin Freeman fans in front of us that would giggle and squeal whenever he was onscreen (read: the whole damn movie). We ended up moving seats after like 10min of that.
