I just want to be clear. I love BMW's. I'm not trying to start a riot, troll, or antagonize anyone.

The M3 and BMW as a whole is very sacred to me. I'm pretty sure the first time I saw the E46 M3, I instantly went through puberty. My young adult life BMW truly taught me what lust was. I came of age staring at the likes of the M Coupe, 330 ZHP, Z8, E46. Hearing of Alex Roy's M5 cross country record romp. The B7 which was so absurd for the time...AMG's and S8 had 340hp HP...BMW had 500! The M5 had the same power as the Ferrari Headliner (360 Modena). The engineers at BMW back then were as Clarkson would say..."Bonkers".

BMW also taught me about the art of cars and how colors affect the way you look at them. Carbon Black, Laguna Seca Blue, Silver Gray Metallic, Phoenix Yellow...Cinnamon Nappa Leather upgrades.

All, that said I am sufficiently worried about the direction of BMW and their M Cars.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I know all the details are not out, yet and I could be over reacting prematurely...

But, How is the M3/4 different than a fully tuned 335? Seriously?

The 335 doesn't have a hood bulge...the engine fits fine why does the m3/4? I there will be 'M' brakes, suspension and electonic goodies making it better and some crazy fuel delivery system which means its "better".

But, how is that different then buying a 335, Cobb tune, Some Dinan Suspension, Brakes, Headers Exhaust, and some chasis stiffening and light weight components?

Kinja'd!!!

When the E46 came out the bulge first appeared on the hood. It wasn't there to create muscular aesthetics (I mean it did have an a aesthetic appeal). But, It was because the car was engineered for the 3.2L straight and with the upgraded fuel delivery systems VANOS it could not fit under the standard hood.

It just feels to me, that back then BMW was focused on building specially engineered cars, which happend to have an M on them. Now it feels as if they're just put M's on cars that really aren't that special...

What do you guys think? I could be way off...

(I know I'm about to get destroyed, be gentle...please)

You could always tune up a 335 and make it as fast as an M3 when the E90 was around.

I personally don't like the F30 or F32 at all. But that's what I said about the E9X when it came out. Give it like a year and after I drive them both a few times at work and they will grow on me.

Keep in mind, the E30 M3 was not that much faster than an E30 325is either. And then as now, the M5 makes about the same power as a mid-engine V8 Ferrari. But what do you want? Do you really really want 600 horsepower in an M3? Wouldn't that overpower the car. Sure, it's possible to make a chassis that can safely handle 600hp. But would that still feel 'right' and the way to go? BMW doesn't feel that way, and that's why they haven't upped the power much. 430 HP is already a barely usable number of horsepowers, and the rest is up to the rest of the car.

I'd wait until the reviews start coming in. BMW M cars have always been slightly mental, but that's not what made them special. What made them special is that, somehow, they managed to get damn near everything just right.

It's not what they do. Anyone can tune cars. It's how they do it.

Personally, I don't really want any M car. Not really. However, I do use them as the benchmark when I'm planning out modifications on a car.

How is an e36 or e46 any different from a tuned version of their base model? I honestly think that these continue the M tradition just fine.

Plain and simple you can get a 335 to M3 level but be prepared to make some serious changes underneath the skin. Like you mentioned they do so by suspension changes, chassis strengthening, engine modifications, upgraded brakes and extensive use of lightweight materials. However, BMW and more specifically the lunatics at the M division will 9 times out of 10 kick the ever living crap out of a third party tuner. They don't just do one part right they get it ALL right ALL the time, it is reliable, comfortable, safe and most importantly neck snapping quick. I have ridden in both modified BMW's as well as M cars and I would take an M over those in less than a heartbeat. The reason they have an M car on all of their ranges is because they sell, M has become quite a status symbol but that doesn't mean they have lost their bite and original cutthroat performance capabilities. Quite the contrary sit in any M car today and you will be smiling ear to ear as you chop any car that so much dares to rev its engine at you. So if they have an M car on all their ranges I would say fine if they are making money and it enables them to make even better cars, then more power to them.

You mean other than the E46 having its own unique larger displacement engine?

Unless there was a 3.2L straight 6 in a 3 series other than the M3 that i didnt know about...

I'm not saying its about the power...its about the excitement of the car and the experience. the E46 had 333hp. the F30 has 430hp. Their 0-60 is the same, it has more torque, and is a forced induction car but the throttle response on the E46 is legendary, mixed with ride and steering and locking dif..made it a hell of a car to drive...now we have a car with 100 more HP and we're getting relatively similiar performance....which leads me to believe the car is heavier, in turn less fun, less percise, less agile.

This is suprising as the rampid availibility of light weight materials compared to 2003 has drastically increased.

This car will probably be close to if not exceed $80k which is 991 Carrera territory...which we all know is VERY good.

I think we'll just have to wait and see. No M car has been bad so far. I think the M3/4 combo will stay true to Motorsport form.

I feel that while the hood bulge may not be functional anymore, it has become a styling cue of m3's. Just as the kidney grilles are to BMW as a whole, they don't serve a purpose other than letting you know a car is a BMW.
