Good news! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! the missing family that went out for a little off-road fun in a Jeep Wrangler on Sunday and never came back. Turns out the truck rolled onto one side very softly, leaving them uninjured but stuck more than 6 miles off trail as the temperatures dropped way below 0. They stayed warm by building a fire and using it to warm rocks, which is excellent thinking.

one of my big fears. But I don't go places in my truck that I would be concerned about being stranded unless I have a second vehicle with me. I also have a box of emergency supplies including sleeping bag, coat, gloves, food and water in my truck at all times. I need to get a highlift or come along or something for that rare off chance though.

Fantastic news! Glad they're ok!
That said, this is why you should always go out with a buddy, or at the very least something along the lines of a sat phone or Spot tracker

Whew, a happy ending to what could have been quite a tragedy.

Given the description of the roll, I can only imagine how frustrated the guy must've been. You're so close to getting out, but it's impossible without help or the right tools.

I also always carry a slackline kit with caribeners that, arranged properly, actually provide a decent amount of force multiplication. I suppose in a pinch I could tie it to the roof and heave it up. Though that would mean I would have to have a tree or boulder nearby to do it.

Always be prepared.
I've been slowly working on my pack for my jeep. Flares, thermal blankets, storm proof matches, first aid kit, so on and so forth. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

When I saw the picture of the kids I was so sad, glad they made it out.

I was glad to hear this today.
I hope the anti-OHV people don't try to use this to shut down access.

Seriously. Poor guy messed up, but he must feel so, so bad about putting kids in that position.
