So the next step for my Volvo was to install the dual SU HIF carbs, which I did. I cleaned them up, got new needles, which I had to order from the UK, they had perfect vacuum, all in all, looked really great for things that sat for 20+ years
I assembled them, set the floats to the best of my knowledge, and set about wrestling them onto the car
I don't have an photos yet of them on the motor, it was dark when I finished. So I have no idea how to tune these carbs. None, I tried, and all I did was almost kill my battery. So I used my BCAA to get her towed to the Volvo specialist I take her to.
There they informed me that my jets won't adjust consistently, and I can't afford the labor to get anyone to rebuild them…..so I towed her back home, and there she sits. :( I'll be putting the Weber back on once it stops snowing, so she runs. The plan has changed to applying for collector plates, and getting the carb work done when I have a spare $300 :p

I'll rebuild them for you.. SUs are easy. Are you anywhere near VA?

I'm in BC, Canada :/ I appreciate the offer though
I was alright with the HS type SUs, these HIFs are giving me trouble though….

If they weren't a matched pair, they won't work for crap.. All SUs are hand burnished from the factory so the parts work correctly in each unit.. If in rebuilding a pair, you swap parts, they wont work well. I'm running a frankensteined pair on my 144 from a pile of SU bodies I had laying around.. and the only way my pistons return is if I only put one screw in the dashpots (saving up for a good rebuildable pair). sucarbs.com has very useful tuning info if you have troubles beyond that. SUs, if dialed in right will put that downdraft Weber to shame (32/36 DGEV I assume). Stick with them, also make sure that you have proper movement in your linkage. Full close to W.O.T using the pedal, and a proper return.

They are a matched pair, amazingly. Came off a 71, poor rusty smogged up old thing. My pistons are actually returning perfectly, they've got brand new needles, the problem is that my jetheads don't seem to be adjusting…I need to recheck everything in the bottom end of them and hopefully I'll get somewhere after that. And yeah the Weber I had on is that exactly, off a 71 145 I think. Someone doesn't seem to be jetted properly, I finally got it as close as I can and there's still hesitation, but I don't have proper linkage travel. On the dual SU setup, however, I have perfect travel, new firewall bushing, it's just my fuel delivery really :/
