Full disclosure; I used to be a pro-Forza gamer who got his start with GT.
Okay, so I used to fight on the side of Xbox and Forza. Why? Because I owned that shit. But, I started with GT and probably never would haven touched the world of "sim" racing without it.
So, I'm admitting it; I've never been able to tell the difference. Okay, correction - I've never honestly believed one product to be better than the other. I was just another biased asshole who couldn't see past the end of his nose.
Now that they're both out, and the arguments abound, I have to admit that since I've stopped investing I've really stopped caring. And now, when I see the fanbois and fangurls argue about which game is better, and by extension the console, I can't help but feel like I'm the Farmer on Animal Farm - I'm watching it happen but fuck me if I can understand what's going on... so I get drunker and drunker.

No, you're not alone. I bought a PS3 and Logitech G27 specifically for GT5. I can't afford to own 2 consoles, so I've never been able to give the Forza series a good play. From what I have heard and seen, it seems like a nice game that does some things better than GT. And as much as I bitch and moan about how the sounds in GT suck, the premium vs standard thing, how they gave us a big fuck you when they released shitty "interior views" for the shittily modeled standard cars, the way you sometimes have to cheat to win, the way too many versions of JDM cars, the way they made the game way too easy by including DLC and the Red Bull car with later releases (and a massive price cut), visually nightmarish menu layouts, and generic modding system (why can't I turbo my muscle car, why does a supercharger give such weak gains on cars like the 2010 Camaro, and why do the mods cost the same regardless of what car it is)...
Despite all of that, GT5 has provided a ton of entertainment.
If I could afford to buy both, I would. But that doesn't mean I'm going to take sides or blindly defend GT since that's what I decided to buy. And since I'm not going to buy another console anytime soon, I don't pay too much attention to the comparisons. I only pay some attention since GT6 is available on PS3.

My friend, an avid GT/PS'er just introduced me to iRacing. It should be noted, first and foremost, that he has an excellent rig and has sunk some serious cash into his sim hobby. But that shit just blew my mind.
Seriously considering not investing in another console and instead spending the money on an okay gaming rig to run iRacing (and be an entertainment hub).

I run mine fine on a dell 8700 and use a thrustmaster Ferrari 458 wheel because it came with its own stand. If you do get into iracing or assetto corsa make sure your wheel is supported because mine wasn't and was a pain in the ass to set up.

Dreams and more dreams. I had a rig, I let it go.
I want it back, but I'm a Daddy now.
If, and the if is big, I get back into racing, I'll end up spending an grand easy. If I get a console, I won't bother with a wheel/pedals/box because I don't really feel, and this is just me, that either of the Console racers really warrants a full rig - which I had for Forza before, but don't think I would again.
It'd have to be iRacing, and then it's an expensive hobby. More so than on a console. My heart is undecided.
I'd rather save my savings, which my wife and I are already slaving at saving, so that we can buy (and stop renting) in a city with a circuit (as all we have here is a small, dirty oval) and get to track days for real... and then it's like bugger pedals, a box, computer or console, and a wheel.
If our daughter hadn't come along and surprised us the way she did, my Mustang would have my full bolt-on list and I'd probably end up with both consoles and a rig.
Now, not so much.
