As we approach the new year I always like to take a week or so and put my year back in perspective to what I want to get out of life — both insofar as me in the here and now and where I'm headed/want to head. I find this to be helpful in good years and bad but it sure isn't always an easy thing to do during the bad ones.

To anyone having a bit of a rough spot, I hope you remember that it's always important to be cognizant of where you are and what you're doing right now more often than not; you certainly can't spend all your time dreaming or saying what if or you won't get anywhere. There are those precious few times, however, where it is more important to keep yours eyes on where you want to be instead of where everything else is telling you that you're headed. I always feel like now is one of those times. Keep your heads up, Oppos.

Well I've had a crappy semester at school, a continued flawless alone streak and been generally down lately but I recognize what you're saying. A new year is a new chance to try, to improve, to succeed.

Dang, I want to be cheery. I really do. There are times, generally brought on by a mild drunkenness, that allow me to be actually cheery without faking it entirely

Don't know if it's a product of my upbringing, or just how my mindset is, but I seem to set myself up for failure, knowingly , without second thought

I certainly hope I can change this in 2014. I have every intention on buying a new Mustang (even moreso if they produce a Bullitt), the wife is talking about producing spawn and I have tons of projects to do around the house (garage FTW). I just hope I can focus on not letting my mind get the best of me as we move toward these goals

You're not alone on the school going downhill.. You could say I bit off a little more than I could chew. Finding a job to fund my "fun stuff" fund is definitely out of the question too.

It really sucks but hey, what can I do about it. I'm just making really short term goals like "turn this paper in on time and get an A on it" and things are getting better. Can't win em all I guess. I'm ranting here but it feels good to let it out, everyone should let it out. What really sucks is knowing I'm letting people down.. It really sucks. Worst feeling especially when it's my parents. Once again I'm just going off but hey.... Here's a picture that sort of (I guess) relates

I believe that no matter how bad you think you have it, there is always somebody a lot worse off. Every time I see a homeless person. I think, you have such a good life compared to him.

I got into medical insurance sales 16 years ago. I thought it would be something I could do for many years. Obamacare changed that. So I went out and got a job. I did not want to go directly into more insurance stuff. At least not right away. So I took a job at Lowe's delivering appliances. I'm loving every minute of it. I'm active, not stuck in an office, and just enjoying the hell out of it. You make the best of what you have.

I was actually thinking about this last night. All-in-all, I'd say 2013 was my best year in the past half-decade. Had some real shit years there for a bit.

My quick rundown went like this:

my niece was born

im 25 and can finally grow a beard. yusss!

will finally be done post secondary school after 7 years (College then University). just need to finish up one class.

if it wasn't for a Cuba bachelor party this past June, all my debt would be paid off next week, instead it will be gone in January

went to Cuba for a bud's bachelor party lol, hadn't been on a vacation since 2008

got laid a bunch

stayed single - was a close call there for a little while. meeting a nice lil'lady is on my radar now (might be in the works as we speak...), but while in school I just didn't have time and this past summer I was getting after it like a Golden Retriever humping the neighbor's kid's face.

improved what were already great friendships. easy for me to say i have 20 close friends, 3 of which are basically brothers/sisters, plus all the other people that are just friends

met some really cool people

have a good job, with good future potential. this is the job that becomes a career

likely buying a house next fall

new car coming too, most probably a 2015 Colorado. kind of want to get a project track car too

i can finally do the things I want to do, i.e. fishing, hunting, track days, workout, and as odd as it sounds, save/invest money

i forced myself to start to seize opportunities where I once would have let them pass me by. there are few things I'm afraid to fail at now.

i can finally relax and not feel worn out. relaxing used to be the 24 minute drive home from school at 2am. i've never been more healthy and haven't had this six pack since high school.

2013 was the ending of a lot of things for me, a turning point more than ending I guess. 2014 sort of starts what the past 25 years has been leading up to.

During Thanksgiving my aunt mentioned that it must be nice that I don't have to work so hard anymore (referring to school), and my dad jumped in and said that he thinks I still work just as hard, it's just that now I can focus my effort on 10 or 15 things instead of essentially just one. That's what next year is all about.
