To give people in some of the colder parts of the world some insight on this situation:

While places like Chicago, New York, and other areas north of the Arctic Circle (above the Texas Panhandle) have to deal with freezing temperatures often, we in Texas rarely confront frozen roads. This does not make us ignorant of how to drive in cold weather; it does, however, mean that our municipalities do not heavily invest in equipment that combats ice and frozen conditions on our roadways. Why not, you ask? Because it doesn't make sense for taxpayers to purchase millions of dollars of de-icing trucks and product that might see action once every three years. Instead, when ice is prevalent in the area, it makes much more sense to just shut most businesses and schools down. Don't like the weather in Texas? Wait a day. It'll change.

It makes perfect sense for a school like SMU to shut down for safety reasons, given Dallas' current predicament.

Is it finals week for you? I have to commute for an 8am final tomorrow morning and am not excited, but we're used to the snow here. Good luck on the cancellation man.

Ah, makes sense. I was going to say, seems less likely to cancel some finals. Starting finals on Thursday though? Do they run into the next week then?

Not really. We have exams on Saturday. Sunday is the day we have off. My four exams are Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday.
