The premium gas is usually on the right, and it's being pumped from the leftmost pump?
Though, that is DEFINITELY not where the gas filler is on a porsche.

We could split the difference and go with nerd. I only have a bachelors in math but that should be good enough to figure out if mental contrition+smart=nerd. Let me call a friend with a psych degree to get a second opinion. Either way good catch on the detail.

I found one by accident on my way through Kansas to Denver.
And I, too, noticed that the fuel filler was in the wrong place.

I'm sure that wouln't hurt anything. I mean oil and gas are both petroleum products, so they're kind of the same thing. Yeah. Totally sure.

Older stations have different nozzles for different grades, there are single nozzles that do 3/4 grades here in MN as well as older stations that have separate ones.

that's why they got rid of it for later model years.. apparently because of American fuel stations were all attended at the time, and the attendants would assume that it was the fuel flap. Though that sounds a bit anecdotal to me.

Sounds pretty likely to me as one of the factors. There's a reason that the diesel nozzle doesn't fit in a gasoline filler port. I'd bet reason # two was that it made it too easy for disaffected youth to mess with the "rich douchebag's" car.

Tell that to the Cheveron down the street from me. The 87 nozzle is in the middle, 91 on the right and 89 on the left. No doubt trying to swindle more people into buying 89 even though it isn't called for in any car. I actually still wonder why there is an option to buy 89, it isn't good for FI motors and has no benefit in cars requiring 87. It baffles me, they should just cut production on 89 and push the 91 up to 93 or something similar. . .

oh I'm sure it happened, but the story seems too 'duh americans are dumb'. If that sort of problem was happening there I'm sure it was in the UK and other parts of Europe where they have full service fuel stations.

Not a huge fan of the stereotype of the "dumb American," not because I take it personally, but because I often run into people who either by lack of education or willful ignorance sure do come off that way. From what I gather it's a phenomena that rears it head in many western nations that spent decades valuing a strong-back over a strong-mind.

There's a station near me like that. And I think the Dodge/Chrysler 5.7 Hemi engine uses the mid grade fuel.
It also costs gas stations nothing to offer it, as they mix regular and premium gas together at the pump to make "mid grade" gas.

Well that is just plain stupid. I don't have a car that requires premium, but I damn well want the option of 93 because why the fuck not? The turbo motors would probably be happier and get better economy, and in CA there are shit tons of refineries and down off of the coast in Huntington beach and even in Long Beach there is oil being pumped out of the ground.

You have to remember that California has special gas blends the rest of the country doesn't have- we're special like that. I wish we had 93 too. I wonder if that octane booster crap works.
Squid
> MtrRider Just Wants Doritos
12/09/2013 at 00:32 | 0 |
Hotrod mag did a test with them, they were effective at reducing knock at ridiculous timing. Their dyno runs showed that there wasn't much benefit on power but the knock was effective in being reduced. So if it is hot out and you got a boosted car then it should help you out, just don't expect miracles. . .
Yeah we have different blends, which allow them to fuck us over in CA when a refinery has an incident and it will take months to get back on line. . .
MtrRider Just Wants Doritos

12/09/2013 at 00:38 | 0 |
Well power wouldn't change because that's not what octane does, but I suppose you could use it to get your real octane rating up to 93. It would get expensive though.

Adding toluene effectively raises your octane on the cheap. I guess if you wanted to tune your motor you could actually tune it to take advantage of the higher effective octane and make more power, but it seems to be too much trouble to have little value.

If you're tuning your street car to that extreme you're looking for trouble. Besides, if you're in Cali that shit wouldn't pass smog anyway.

12/09/2013 at 00:54 | 0 |
Yup, my sentiments exactly. But there is an incentive to buy new cars and fuck with them because you get 7 or 8 years before you are due for the first smog check. . . So you get about 3 or 4 years of out of warranty bliss with out having to deal with smog. . . Other than that you are fucked every two years.
MtrRider Just Wants Doritos

12/09/2013 at 01:00 | 0 |
Yeah it's tempting. But then when that time is up you have a hotrod you can't register, nobody will want to buy it and you can either revert to stock (or close to stock) status, register it in another state, or let is sit. Or you can buy a car from >1972 and do whatever you damn well please to it.
Or pay off the smog guy, although I would like to state I am not in any way giving legal advice.
Squid
> MtrRider Just Wants Doritos
12/09/2013 at 01:30 | 0 |
Depending on what you do, it isn't too terribly hard to put the car back to stock to get it smogged, it is just a pain in the ass to do and time consuming. It also depends upon having the space to store your stock parts to put on for one day every 2 years. But there are guys who do have turbos and swap back to stock to pass emmisions. It is also way harder than people think to pay off the smog tech, he is basically risking his business for a payout of an extra couple hundred dollars.
The pre 72 cars is a good route to go, but you are generally stuck with something heavy and doesn't like to turn. There are ways around the smog shit, but it is all a pain in the ass.
