Winter tires =/= snow tires

I don't get the joke. Snow tires = football?

Guessing "soccer mom" doesn't carry the same sting in places they call it football.

Footballers' wives then?

I blame cultural differences, because I'll never get the joke.

I play football ("soccer") by the way. And drive cars with studded winter tires.

Not sure... Help we need a Brit or an Aussie to provide an equivalent term. Lol.

The fact that everyone uses winter tires doesn't help either.

A "Soccer Mom" is a, typically suburban, helicopter parent. Overly cautious, over protective, schedules every second of the kids' days for them.

Probably not. Murricans don't seem to be aware that anything besides All-Seasons exist, at least in my experience.

Like Ian said, over-protective mother who thinks she needs a giant AWD SUV to keep her kids safe (AWD because sometimes there are leaves on the road!) and threatens to sue the school if her kid falls down and bruises his knee playing soccer, because injuries are never ok, no matter how small!

I had an idea that it was something like that, but I'm not sure if we've got such a term. Maybe "hysterical mom", haha :P

I just don't see why snow tyres would be a soccer mom thing. I'd have thought the reverse, and she'd be driving around on bald summer tyres in six inches of snow.

I'm looking more to what Dusty said above. The same type of person who MUST HAVE AWD because it rains some time. Heard way to many wannabe macho types in my area brag about "not needing" snow tires because they "know how to drive." (not pointing fingers at anyone on the site just to make that clear) I make sure to wave when I drive past them stuck in the snow.

Are winter and snow tires the same?

I find the term used interchangeably on many sites. I found one that suggested that winter tires have better highway manners but are still good in snow, but snow tires can be "squirmy" on pavement. Pepboys website interchanged the terms from one sentence to the next however. YMMV. If you're really curious, ask AddMustard in the comment thread here. He seemed pretty opinionated on the matter and may have a good explanation of the differences.

I don't know, the equivalent over here would be school-run mums in their Chelsea Tractors and so-on, but although they all have (or had) big 4x4s which never so much as drove up on a grass verge, they're not the type to even know there is such a thing as snow/winter tyres, let alone whether their husbands put them on their cars.

To be honest I was torn between soccer-mom and nerd. I really couldn't think of who was the "stereotypical" user of snow tires, just that it's something the rednecks around here are proud of pointing out that they aren't.
