Spent the night making a nice handle for my previously made knife wrench. The blade portion of the knife is made out of a parting tool from my shop. I welded it to a craftsman wrench, but something seemed missing. So I made a handle for it tonight. Made from some walnut we had I worked up this handle. It only has one dowel pin in it because, while I planned to use 2, tool steel—the stuff lathe parting tools are made out of—is quite hard. As in, harder than the High Speed Steel drill bits we had. So only one dowel is was.
The handle is a little bulky looking, but I made it how big it is so that it fits well in the hand. I was thinking about making it sleeker and flow with the knife better, but I prefer form over function.
Thoughts?

Cool, but watch your wrists on that stubborn bolt.

Coincidentally, I also made a fork out of the boxed end of the wrench. Don't know how anyone would use those knife-pliers though.

So did you anneal and work that or how did you do it?
It can also help to attach the handle and shape some to better form to the contours of your knench

That's a beauty of a utensitool there. Jees, you could dress a Buck, fix yer Buick and cutcher Steak with the same tool.

When are you going to start working on Knife Wrench for kids?

Well Yea I attached the handle first and then started shaping it, if that's what you're talking about. The handle as it is now fits really well in my hand, so I'm happy with it.

Sweetness. You make that yourself?

That's what matters! I had a harder time getting my handle right on the knife I made than making the steel part.
How did you shape the knife though? You said you had a hard time making the tang hole so I assume no anneal, so what was used to grind the edge?

So I started with a parting tool (high speed steel cutting edge brazed on top of some sort of other tool steel) and a craftsmen wrench. I cut the wrench and welded it to the parting tool, then just went to work on a bench grinder and a sander to shape the blade. I used an 80 grit metal sander, a regular ole bench grinder, and then a diamond wheel bench grinder to finish out the blade edge. Then some sharpening on a sharpening stone.

I wish I had made it, but no, I'm pretty sure my mother gave it to me on Christmas a few years back.

I really want to make one of these. How well does it keep its edge, or is it too green to tell?

Yeah, was thinking of that... I'd hate to see a tight bolt come loose all-of-a-sudden like.
Minus one finger.

I'm getting a very "prison-shiv" vibe from this. I like it.

That's pretty cool, thanks for writing that out! I always love to see people making things and see how they did it.

I made the knife part of it over summer, and even though I didn't use it all that much, for regular, kitchen duty, it held its edge really well. That was the benefit of making the blade out of a parting tool. The tool steel holds a very nice edge, and it a very sharp blade. I'd have to highly recommend making the blade out of some sort of tool steel. I made a similar little axe thing out of regular carbon steel, and while it was sharp initially, it lost it's edge pretty quick (along with getting surface rust pretty quickly).
