USS Arizona
USS Utah
USS Oklahoma
Despite the fact that 21 ships were seriously damaged or sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor, only three were considered lost. The rest were repaired and served during WWII. Sadly, there was no bringing back the more than 2400 who died in the attack.

My grandfather and dad were on the USS Portland. (Salute)
They were lucky to be out on maneuvers in the ocean when the attack came.

Both your dad and grandfather were on the same ship at the same time? I would imagine that was unusual even back then. Definitely a lucky break to be at sea at the time.

Actually, it was just my dad. But, if I put just that, I would get all the 'sters asking questions about shit and making comments on and on. And I don't really care to hear the hate and derogatory comments. Sorry.

An additional note, I wanted to show pictures of the ships in their glory. To often all we see of them is during or after the attack. Those were amazing machines for their day and they had histories before December 7. They were crewed by guys probably not much older than most of the folks here on Oppo as well, so you can imagine they talked about dames and the latest Ford or Chevrolet with the same enthusiasm as they are discussed here today. Just a bit of perspective.

There was a posthumous Medal of Honor winner was on the Utah. He was a boiler operator who even though the ship was capsizing refused to leave his boilers so that he could could save other lives. Brave men.
Per Wiki "As the crew began to abandon ship, one man—Chief Watertender Peter Tomich —remained below decks to ensure as many men could escape, and to keep vital machinery running as long as possible; he received the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions. [2] "
