I tried out simraceway because hey, it's a free sim why not?
My only equipment was my mouse and keyboard, but I figured I'd be ok. I know I haven't played a ton and really learned what I'm doing, but it seems overly difficult without having a proper wheel/pedals. Trying to module throttle and brakes with my mouse clicks is really quite insane, since a click is "on" or "off", you have to change the rate of your clicking to modulate braking and throttle, otherwise it's always "fully on" or "fully off". We all know that won't cut it in racing.
Steering is slightly difficult, but I know I could get fairly used to it. You really had to play around with the setting, both on my mouse and within the game. After a while it becomes useable, though. I could see that it would still be way more advantageous to be using a wheel (as is expected).
My biggest complaint was that in the test driving mode, it wouldn't let me row my own gears. For whatever reason it was on auto, and I tried changing it but found no such option. I didn't want to try full on races against others and end up ramming people because I'm testing out a setup. Might have just been part of that mode, but highly annoying nonetheless.
I realize I could do other configurations for braking and throttle, but I wasn't sure I would like any other way. On keys, turning would take 2 keys, braking, throttle, clutch, shift directions... It's a lot of keys to remember and I'd still have the modulation issue.
Not sure if I'll keep on without using something else, maybe my xbox controller.

Best of luck with your tests if you are prepping for exams or such.
