This is Rosie, say hello!
So, I was talking to a fellow jalop, and they told me about their car and referred to it by its name. And that got me thinking, how many of you name your cars? And more importantly, how do you come up with your names? I am in the Army so I got used to giving my items that I couldn't lose names so I would develop a personal relationship with it, and i have named all of my cars since.
Personally me, I don't try to figure out a name. And for the 3 cars I have personally bought and own now, I just let them come to me. And usually within the first week or two of ownership it does come. What about all of you?

My motorcycle's name is Bridget.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 11:47 |

never have I named a car. It is like naming livestock, you'll just be sad when they inevitably leave you for another owner or that great junkyard in the sky
![]() 12/06/2013 at 11:47 |
|
One of my cars is named the other is not. A friend of mine has named his car and even went so far, as to put it on FB and then mark that is in relationship with it. Which is kind of little over the top.

I recently named my Ranchero Oswald. Mostly because of the Falcon/Oz connotations, and it's a sheer coincidence that I only thought of later that's it's a '63 (yikes). Yeah, no Lee Harvey meant there.
My Land-Rover is Percival, probably because of overweening britishness and having watched Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines shortly before I named it. The Benz is Helmut - no reason, really.

I thought all cars were given names by their producers?
I simply use eiter the model name or the manufacturer itself. It's personal enough.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 11:50 |
|
Gotta name the cars. Sometimes it takes me a while, but it always comes to me. It's nice to get a rather unique one so you can own an oppo tag ...
Only time I haven't named one is my Toyota, cause if it goes to the junkyard, I don't want to have to have a funeral.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 11:50 |

How often do you ride her?

I named my '13 Escape Mattie after our own lovely Matt Hardigree

My Scion xB is named "Snowmobile II." Snowmobile I was a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais that could not be moved in the snow. I used to drive around town regularly with a foot of snow down, and have zero issues. The Scion is more prone to movement, but it's easily controlled movement. I can easily drift around a snowed in bend with minimal effort.
My previous car was a Kia. Decency laws forbid me from sharing the name of that car in public.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:04 |

Same with me, sometimes it's taken upwards of a few weeks.
And how do you go about owning an oppo tag? I'm still fairly new to oppo
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:04 |

I keep her locked up in the garage in the winter, so not often recently.

They have, but I'm just curious in general of who does and doesn't, to me when I name a car it isn't just a name but the name also represents what the car means to me as well.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:05 |
|
Haha that is pretty funny stuff. Why is only one named but the other isn't? Just didn't want to name it?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:06 |

What kind of motorcycle?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:06 |

You make up a name that nobody else has, and add the tag to all the posts about your car! Basically, it's just luck.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:06 |

I'm sad when selling a car even when I don't name it, so there's no difference.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:07 |

Must just be a person to person thing, hell I even named livestock when I was growing up as hell, granted it was only one bull that I helped raise and about 5 years later my family ate him, to me it isn't the end I am concerned about it's the (will sound cliche) journey to the end and the memories created in the process, and I like to attach names to those.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:07 |

The first rule of car names:
1. you do not name your own car
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:09 |

Named her Zoe
1974 Datsun Fairlady
Z

So long as you don't whisper softly as you get in "I want to be inside you Mattie"...I'm okay with this. And even if you do.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:10 |

Those are pretty awesome names man. Especially like the Percival, a pretty unique and rare name
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:12 |
|
Haha that is pretty awesome. How are you liking the Escape?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:12 |

My first car, a rusty '80 Rabbit that my Mom named "Rusty".
My third car was named by a co-worker "The Green Wiener".
The only Ford Ranger I owned, "The Lone Ranger".
My current DD is a big, long, white GMC Sierra that I named "The Fridge". Yeah, I've never really been happy with this name. Oh well, you can't force these things.
Oh, and my mom has had a couple of big '70s Fords, "Gerald" and "Betty". Then a car (years before Acura even existed) that she named "Vigor". "Vigor" was replaced by a Chevette that kept dying, so it was named "Rigor" (as in rigormortis). Then a Hyundai Pony "Trigger" (pony - horse - Lone Ranger's horse Trigger).
And no, actually, I've never even seen The Lone Ranger show or movie.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:13 |

Nice, what happened to the Cutlass? And how is the xB? I have never personally tried any Scion cars before, but I always try to pay attention to them.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:13 |

I guess I'm not that creative :P
If I made or discovered something new I'd probably use my own name, like Ingvar Kamprad did with IKEA or the McDonald brothers with their restaurant.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:14 |
|
Well see, I don't personally name them, the car gods magically put a name into my head and that becomes law.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:14 |

![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:16 |

I name my cars, but usually just nicknames. Sometimes they stick, sometimes they morph, and sometimes I just forget what I tried to name them.
My '86 Mustang GT was called the Beast, and it stuck so hard that the next owner started calling it that.
My '96 Crown Vic PI didn't get a good name until about 6 months before I sold it (It was the Pig).
Now, my '88 Thunderbird is Leroy, from Leroy Jenkins fame. (It makes a lot of noise, but not a lot of effective action).
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:17 |

I love it! I'm pleased with the gas mileage and its get-up-and-go. Recalls are annoying, but oh well.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:17 |

It's just all about what you wanna do really, I just like to see what other car enthusiasts do, how we are incredibly different but same at the same time.
And holy hell I never knew IKEA was actually a guys name
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:17 |

I haven't named one yet. My Spitfire might be called Idris if the name sticks :)
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:18 |

Hey if it sticks it sticks, and the third car name is a pretty funny one. What would be your favorite car you've owned so far?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:18 |

Wheres the name come from?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:19 |

Eh, always happens, didn't they redesign it in 2012 or something like that? And really, what is the mileage?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:19 |

Thanks! I got a 73 Celica too named Celia, but currently undergoing a long restomod.
If you were to name your 3 cars what would it be if you had to of course
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:20 |

Now that is a pretty awesome name, Leroy Jenkins. What did you have under the hood of your fox?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:20 |

Don't make me choose a favourite, that's like a parent choosing a favourite child. I loved them all.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:21 |

I get low 20's around town and low 30's on highway. The big redesign was 2013 when the EcoBoost engine was used.........1.6L or 2.0L. It's the 1.6 that is having the recalls. To my knowledge, the 2.0 has never been recalled.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:22 |

My named car is my Lada which was my first car - It is called Stanka, which is a female Easter European name, but if you chop it like S Tanka in Bulgarian it means "With the tank".
My other car is Merc CLK and just couldn't find a nice name for something done by ze Germans.
Our last family car, a first gen Euro-spec CTS was called Jennifer, after Jennifer Morrison form House M.D., because it was one of my teeneage celebrity crushes.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:23 |

Yeah, that would be nice. I love Eva, but wish she was in a bit better condition. Makes a really fun snowmobile though!
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:24 |

True, I think I equally hate and love all my cars as well. You know now that I think about it I don't think I could pick a favorite either.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:24 |

The Mustang?
It was a mostly stock 5.0. I've owned more powerful and more tricky cars since, but it was my first "Powerful" car and always seemed to try and get me into trouble or in a ditch. I loved it.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:25 |

Oh I already named them
07 300 - Shirly
86 944 - Rosie
86 Accord - Emelia
And a 73 Celica? Where did you get that thing, I rarely even see those things for sale!
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:27 |
|
Oh I bet. And I know exactly what you mean, I picked up an 86 944, and that thing was neglected to no end. To put things into perspective, when I took off the fuel filter, it was stamped 1995, that was this year. Those things need to be changed every 2 years. You ever take Eva to the track or anything?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:28 |

I never had the opportunity to drive one of those, it always seems like a lot of fun punctuated by some danger
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:29 |

No, she wouldn't pass inspection yet. I'd like to at some point, though. Right now I'm lucky that she takes me to work and back every day. Hopefully I find a way to get some extra money soon so that I can take her in for a real repair and inspection.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:29 |

I don't want to further this...it could go reaaaaaally wrong haha.
But well played.

I have never felt compelled to name any of my cars. Except the shitty ones, then its something unimaginative like "the shitbox". Ive got one of those at the moment. 86 ranger 2wd, 4 lehargic squirrel propulsion. Please die, you aren't even worth scrapping, shitbox.

What's wrong with her?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:37 |

It's a Welsh name actually. It's the name of a Dragon that lives in the furnace of a steam train in a children's program I used to watch.
I just thought it fits :)
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:38 |

Oh man sick. Diggin the Shirly. Yeah you'll find a few/many here in the Bay Area. From the coupes to the liftbacks youll find something at least.
I found some for ya:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/422936…
I'll tell you this though, the Datsun that I bought was sold to me for $2,500 and 58K original miles.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:42 |
|
Thanks, I literally named the 300 about 5 minutes after I paid for it.
I really dig the liftbacks, for some reason I am a complete sucker for the fastback look, but here in DC any pre 80's Celica is kind of rare, from what I've seen anyways. And damn, you picked it up for that cheap? Anything wrong with it?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:43 |

Just a few minor things. Ignition tumbler doesn't work, so I have a toggle switch to turn her on and a hotwire to start. Still in the process of wiring that up properly. She has a random power drain problem that I can't figure out for the life of me. She'll work fine most of the time, but randomly once every week or so she won't have enough power to start, I'll have to jump her. Not the biggest of deals, but kind of annoying. Can't find a pattern at all. She also has a bit of an idling problem, which is occasionally scary if I think she might stall and then not start (see: power issue...) but I can heel-toe just fine if need be to keep her in the right rev range. And lastly, but probably not least, one or two injector seals leak at the top. I tried to fix this, but just moved the leak from the front injectors to the back. So fuel drips a bit outside of them and gas fumes enter the cockpit when I give it the beans. And, as with most of our older vehicles, some interior things could use a bit of fastening/replacing.
On the bright side, I have fixed a few things in the last month...
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:44 |

Good summary.
I think it's still one of the best hooligan's cars I've ever driven. It's still fairly cheap to get one, power is upgradable to insane levels for relatively cheap, it's really simple to work on and built stout to handle abuse, and even in stock form with 2.73 rear gears it'll happily burnout and slide around (possibly more than you want). Sure, it is a bit twitchy when you get it loose, but that just makes you feel that much more accomplished when you get it right.
I'm actually trying to recreate the feeling of the Beast in Leroy, it already has a 5 speed swap and a Lo-po version of the 5.0 and is also built on the Fox chassis, I just need to get it up to power and add a few other things (I'd like bigger brakes). I doubt it'll be as twitchy though, the couple hundred extra pounds and couple inches of wheelbase really calms it down. (Still fun for a hooligan like me though.)
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:46 |

Well at least you got a fuel things done. And I have the fuel injector leak problem with my Accord as well. If you plan on keeping her a while, I would say just plan out an entire fuel revamp day, redo all the lines, all the injectors and fuel rail. Might seem like overkill but you won't have to touch it again for years. That's the thought process I'm going with my 944 anyways, I see something messed up, there is probably more, redo it all. And for the power drain, maybe a switch somewhere that isn't turning off? I mean hell maybe even the clock is sucking down more power then it should be.

I always thought DC has their share of rare cars. So much for my ignorance lol. Hell NO!!! I was surprised as hell. When I got there, the only part rusting was the decklid window and that was only a rough patch of rust. Seats were original (vented). Radio was missing but who cares. The special that came with it was the modded triple webers. I had to change my pants after driving it home. Rosie looks sick btw. Really clean.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:53 |
|
The lines and rail seem fine, I had the injectors refurbished (a new set of S50 injectors is $750) I just can't install them with the rail properly by myself. I also want to have a pressure test done to make sure that's the only issue with the fuel. That might fix the idle too, but I doubt it because I've had that issue since I bought the car and the idle control valve is notorious on the E36s.
We're talking about a power drain that happens overnight, or in 3-4 hours while I'm at work. I have a 3-month old battery. That kind of drain would blow up a clock. It's just strange because it's so random. I'll get in to take off for lunch and it won't start. But I can leave it sit for three or four days and it's fine. I've unplugged a lot of stuff that isn't essential trying to nail it down. My radio isn't even hooked up.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 12:53 |

Well DC does have it's own set of rare cars, I mean for example one of my favorite classic American cars is a Buick Skylark, there are a few around here, there is a lot of exotic cars as well, I mean a marine on post has a GT-R, bunch of Maserati's, saw a Aston Martin in rush hour yesterday, it's hard to notice them sometimes though. And that is an insane deal man, good stuff. And I appreciate it, but looks can be deceiving, lower right of the front valance there has a chunk missing, and the paint job isn't original, pretty sure it was some MAACO paint job, but, for what it's worth it is clean, it was neglected but not abused, and managed to snatch it up for less then 3k

I've been thinking about grabbing up a Mustang (hopefully a fox body) when the time/money/space allows me to, but until then I'll be happy just listening to awesome hooning stories.

I always name them. Some have made fun of me... and then inadvertently started calling them by their names too. The downside is I get attached to cars and don't ever want to sell them.
06 Mazdaspeed6. White exterior and Black interior. I called her cookies and cream.... Cookies for short (like an ore0)
89 S10: "Truckie" <—- previous owners kid him truckie. That stuck and its been truckie since.
04 M3 Vert: Emma (Em-3)
13 CTS-V Wagon: Patty. short for Patty Caddy. Stemmed from something like patty wagon and then Patty rhymed with Caddy.
Fiance's car: 06 Murano (black on black): so the only fitting name was Momo Monique the Murano (she's got a big black ass)
nothing wrong with naming cars!
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:02 |

The Cutlass experienced a series of ever escalating misfortunes beginning my sophomore year of college, and finally found itself replaced by another hand-me-down, the Kia. Within a month of selling it (for $500), the rear suspension just collapsed. By contrast, the Kia was a giant misfortune.
I love the xB. There's more legroom in the back than most SUVs, it's easy to load a bunch of stuff into it, and it's very comfortable. It's also very, very basic. I would love to go with an FR-S, but family.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:03 |

Well if the fuel was messing up your idle wouldn't it cause a misfire as well?
Yeah that's true, more or less spit balling here, what about cooling fans? It sounds like maybe a large system gets stuck on and sometimes it doesn't?
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:06 |
|
Haha those are pretty awesome names man, I like it. But yeah I end up getting attached to mine too, but fortunately I haven't sold off any yet, so we will see how I feel when I get there.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:07 |
|
Probably. But since it's very rarely an issue, I don't know.
It seems like I should be able to tell if a large system is on. The car goes dark and quiet when I turn it off. Also worth mentioning, I replaced the alternator (twice, actually since one had a bad bearing) because I had an alternator killing my batteries. So, new alternator, new battery.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:09 |

Dang, well sorry to hear about that little mishap.
I got lucky with the 86 twins, my wife LOVES the BR-Z, so as soon as I get a good chunk of money saved up for a down payment I'm picking up one of those. Hopefully by then they come out with a turbo model
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:10 |
|
Hmm, I think the way to go would be to test all of your systems with a volt meter (or whatever the hell they call them) and see if another one is pulling more power then it should, a workshop/haynes manual should tell you what the voltage of your systems are
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:12 |

The weight varies a bit by year and submodel, but figure around 3000 to 3200 pounds for a V8, but I believe the early 4cyl models were down around 2500 pounds. So, not really a lightweight, but lighter than modern muscle cars.

![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:19 |

That's not too bad at all, with enough power and balancing you should be able to hoon it quite nicely

I don't have speakers so I'll have to watch it when I get home
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:21 |

I've started that process with the stuff under the dash (since all the wires are exposed anyway) and haven't come up with anything. What I need is the kind (name escapes me at the moment) I can stick on the battery to see what's being drawn in total when it's off. But it's hard to troubleshoot something that only happens once in a while.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:24 |

Yeah true, what about the forums? Surely you aren't the only person with this problem.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:25 |

My car is called "the beast" because it's very extremely loud. It is loud because of it's fart cannon so I am sure everyone on here loves it.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:25 |
|
Well, I suppose it all depends on what kind of car you've got it on
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:28 |

Well, it's on a lowered 2003 cavalier, so I am pretty sure if everyone on here knew that I'd be chased down and stabbed to death with torches and pitchforks.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:35 |

You know I can appreciate the irony in that, I had an 98 Cavalier back in the day, gotta work with what you got

I've read plenty of forums, made a couple Oppo posts. People are as helpful as they can be without being able to tear my car apart and apply a multimeter to everything. I'll find it eventually.

or what you can afford.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:38 |

Exactly, I'll make fun of some choices people make but I only just kid, because sometimes that's all a car enthusiast has, we all gotta start somewhere. I started with a 89 honda civic DX, with no power anything.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:39 |

Cookies was the first and only new car I've purchased. so I had a lot of separation issues with that one :)
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:40 |
|
Well as long as it doesn't become a larger issue then you are golden, but I always hate that crap where you can't figure something out. I had one of those taking apart my clutch, the pilot bearing had seized and couldn't take out my torque tube, with a lot of crazy ideas I eventually got it off, it involved me breaking a triple square tool, a 1/4 ratchet, and using a crowbar, but I got that damn thing off.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:40 |

My previous car (before the Cavalier) was even worse. 1992 Ford Tempo. 3 speed auto. Slow as all hell.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 13:42 |

That sounds terrible. I don't work on my own clutch. I'd like to get the electrical thing figured out, but since I have a portable jumpstarter in the trunk, it never takes me more than a couple minutes to get going again.

That's not too bad then, just a mild inconvenience. But yeah, it is pretty horrible, but the reason a 944 is worse then most clutch jobs is because the transmission is in the back of the car, and it's connected by a torque tube, and everything is dependent on one another, so the correct position everything sites (engine/tranny) the torque tube does, I haven't put it back in but I can tell it is going to be a painful experience.

I usually name all my cars some obscure name. But this one was an exception. The name I had in mind got vetoed. Meet ELWOOD
I have been to numerous Corvette racing events and Jake is the Corvette mascot. Someone in my car club got the idea in his head that since the Cadillac race team is also at many of the events the Corvettes are at and I had created a logo for the car based on Jake, why not do a Blues Brothers spoof. Everyone in the club ran with it, and it stuck. I even got a chance to capture "Jake and Elwood" at the Texas Mile where we both were competing.
It was so apropos, I kept it. I have since replaced all the Cadillac shields with Elwood logo - the grill, the wheel caps, the steering wheel and the tail. Both race teams thinks it hilarious. The two main drivers for Team Cadillac are former drivers from the Corvette team and like that I poke fun at Jake. Most Corvette owners don't get the joke, but when they do its a great conversation starter or they turn their nose up and walk away. I'm cool with it either way.
