I've seen tons of panther hate on the FP, I just remind myself that most of the people who complain of it being a shitty outdated platform, usually also drive some shitty car.

*shrug* I honestly don't get the love it gets on here and tend to agree that it's an outdated chassis with crappy handling (My previous cars were an 05 Mazda6s hatchback, followed by a '10 Mini Cooper S, and now a '14 Focus ST), and I wouldn't touch one of those grandpa-mobiles with a 10 foot pole. However, I also recognize that I'm not their intended market and that they make for great sofas with wheels that will float down the highway....but will return crappy gas mileage while doing so. If that's your thing, more power to you, but they just do nothing for me.

26-30 highway in a 4000lbs sedan with a 20 year old motor isn't bad MPG I would say. It has no cylinder deactivation, no direct injection, it still uses a 4spd auto.
The 03+ cars handle much better due to the hydroformed front end, as well as the rack and pinion and what is arguably a coil over, double control arm front end. No cheap ass macpherson struts here.
Everyone who says they can't handle thinks of the base model cars with the soft rate springs and no rear swaybar. Ford even offered the Handling & Performance Package for a long time for people that wanted the car to take a corner without a foot of body lean.

I have never seen that high with the ones I've had experience with, those got around 15-20ish on the highway. If they actually got that high of mileage, then that's pretty incredible, but it just wasn't my experience. As for the handling, well the only ones I've been in have been the 3 my grandfather owned (the term land yacht always came to mind riding in them because they felt as though they were floating), so no handling package there! That said, I've never looked at them as bad cars, they certainly have their advantages with being cheap to maintain, comfortable to ride in even over long distances, and they had a big engine with plenty of power to pass people on the highway, they just strike me as...boring. Yes it's RWD, yes it has a V8, but it was also a Camry before the Camry was a thing.

I pulled 26mpg coming back form MD to NJ in my 04 marauder which at the time only had an intake and tune on it, with the stock 3.55 gears. It seems that anyone who taps 30 has a 06-11 car, 2.73 gears and a single exhaust. 28 isn't to uncommon, 30 has happened but it ain't easy.

Huh, well I'll be damned. Very cool, just makes them even better cruisers.

How easy and effective would an IRS swap be?

I only know of one person who had a 2002, who swapped in a jag IRS so he could bag and slam the car. It was a LOT of work.
