My girlfriend agreed to buy me a radar detector, and I'm curious as to what everyone has experience with here. I've known two people with a Valentine One that swear by them, but I'm curious if there's any better deals out there.

What would you recommend for radar detectors, oppo?

I have always heard it is the V1 vs the Escort Passport detectors. I have an older 8500 that is very good but I do get lots of false alarms and kind of want to upgrade to one of the newer models.

Is there any budget? If not, get yourself a Escort of some sort. I've had one for 4ish years and its never failed me. My dad just picked up a new Passport 9500ix and damn is that thing good.

man are those things pricey. I guess it pays for itself if it avoids one speeding ticket but still yikes.

Ya, extremely expensive but depending on how you look at it, its worth the price. My dad is a chronic speeder so this was almost a necessity for him.

Get the Valentine, and remote, put the clip on backwards and mount it into the headliner above the rear view mirror, get a 8' long phone line and wire it to the remote display at the dash power port.

V1. No contest. Its the closest thing you'll have to diplomatic immunity. And get the remote readout too. I've run one for years and as long as you act like you got a little bit of sense it's great. But if you're alone on the highway doing 85 and the cop comes over the hill in front of you, ain't no detector gonna save you from that. But in light traffic it's a joy to have.

Don't listen to anyone who hasn't owned both V1 and Escort detectors. Otherwise, all you're gonna get is ownership bias. The new Escort 9500ix is better than V1 in every way. The V1 original claim to fame was longest detection distance, but that was on X-band and nobody shoots X anymore. The 9500 uses GPS technology to filter out false-positives, and now I never get alerts anywhere around my normal commutes unless it's an actual cop. Also, over time you build the ability to tell if a cop is ahead or behind just by nature of the alert sounds, so the V1's arrows are kind of superfluous. Besides, it never mattered to me whether a cop was ahead or behind, because I slowed down regardless.

Escort has some newer detectors, but I don't have any experience with them, so can't comment. Also, biggest advice is to LEARN your detector. A radar detector operates very much like a metal detector. It's not a magic cop-finder, just a tool that detects radar emissions. Operator experience counts, and it will take several months or more to get good at distinguishing alerts. All that said, most everyone who buys a detector will highly recommend it (sometimes aggressively) because just about any detector will pay for itself quickly, both in avoided tickets and peace of mind.
