It's been 20 years now. Have you already forgotten the notchback?
Just look at what the lack of one has made people do.

I miss the old PC Mustangs, although the ones the RCMP got tended to go through transmissions like crazy.
The last two pictures? Fuck that guy. I know what he's trying to accomplish, but the execution is, at best, horrible.

Haha, I learned to drive stick on an 86 Notchback!

yeah.. definite identity crisis there..
given build quality and perceived value, eventually a Fox body notch will be rarer than original Mustangs. Note that I didn't say more desireable :)

I actually miss my ol' Notch-back. If I took the time to put in a manual transmission and rock a decent engine (seriously, the 200ci engines were a stupid choice to put into a slushbox 'stang), I'd probably still own it.
And despite having blown by police cars many a time, not once did I get ticketed.
Hurray for white Mustangs!

Former owner of an '81 here. First car I bought myself after beating the shit out of the Bugs and Type III's my parents graciously procured for me.

Given the weight savings, the Fox-notch is the absolutely preferred choice for anyone building a drag/track car. The difference is 2700lbs for a notch vs. 2900+ for the hatch/fastback (its nearly 300 lbs more). The notch also has a stiffer back section of chassis. As a result, the notch is extremely hard to find on Craigslist unless it's a 4-cylinder 2.3 Lima version, and even those will be bought if the buyers project involves a new engine/tranny swap.
I've been looking for my own mad science rallycross idea and I can't find any decently priced notches. Decently priced meaning that I seriously think that the FOX body has totally bottomed out and the 5.0 fox notch will most likely start going up in value for those project cars....not like collectible but I mean a 120k mile fairly rust free if you can find it run out 5.0 notch is now $4-5k...and you wont be able to talk them down because someone will be around to buy it. It truly is the ultimate bolt on fun/$ car out there so these Craigslist prices are reflecting that.

Excuse me, it was an 85. It was my sister's first car. I helped built it's silly little 4 cylinder when I was 12 for my first rebuild. It was a fun little car 4 cylinders and 4 speeds and it typically ran with or beat the v6 camaro's and firebirds of the same generation. That may have been the stick giving us a better launch though.
I remember because of my lack of skill with the manual that I would spin the tires in every gear lol

(dangit, I was trying to play down the value. shh. ) yes, platform-wise it's great, but it also has a unique style, love or hate, it's what it is. A 64 Mustang is a 64. A 84 should look like a 84.
