The WB-57F is a derivative of the English Electric / Martin Canberra bomber. Like the U-2 it uses its huge wings for high altitude, long duration missions.

And people thought the B-52 had an impressive lifespan. Canberra first flight: 1949. B-52 first flight: 1952.

True, but the B-52 is still acting in its main design role as a heavy bomber. Canberra not so much.

Always loved this plane, especially the NASA version. Somehow the longer, blunter nose helps it (along with the awesome paint job), and the modified wings. The way they sit when they're landed always made me think of something like a seabird sleeping with its wings outstretched and beak on the ground.

During Vietnam they mounted a gatling gun to the bomb bay and fired almost straight down into the jungle. Like a giant weed whacker.

Really? Pretty rare bird. Supposedly one of the most valuable to the US military right now as well.
