I can't be the only one thinking this thing is god awful ugly. The front is alright, but it just doesn't make sense with the rear clip. The 2014 looks much better, at least in my opinion. The new engine options are amazing and make me excited, but I wouldn't be caught dead in one of these.
If they made that? I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Give me something that's revolutionary and stunning; not bloated and a last gasp to a design language that's been beaten like a dead horse.

Well the rendering you posted looks good because they started out with this image. Something tells me it might be a little too expensive to adapt the platform for the Mustang.

I am sure you already know, but this is just a V8 Vantage with a bad photoshop. still would buy over that thing in the magazine.
And I work with a few guys who are big Mustang guys, and they all hate it, as do I

People don't want new and revolutionary. They want the same shit they've always had and they want it to suck slightly less than before.
The last time we had a total departure from older designs in the pony car world, the mustang suffered slow sales, the camaro took a 3-4 year hiatus, and the Firebird - along with the whole bloody pontiac brand - freakin' died. Nobody who can buy these things want's new. They want old designs with new tech under the skin.

Yes, I'm aware, the wheels are a dead giveaway. I'm mostly getting at the need for a new direction, not the 60's with a nice update every 5 years.

Awkward is the perfect word to describe it. I'd love to see some real-life pictures. I'm sure the driving experience is better, and that 4 cylinder is pretty cool, but that's about it for now.

The proportions look alright in normal viewing angles, not like in the above photo shoot.

The only things I don't like about that leaked image is the high belt line and the body-colored diffuser. Otherwise, it draws heavily from the 1970 Mach 1, while including bits from the 2013-14 Mustang, Enos concept, and the corporate Ford styling.

This is why I like photos of cars in real life rather then in a set-up photo shoot. It makes the cars look much more natural and therefore very nice-looking.

Do you expect this to be some massive revelation to me? It's irrelevant. It's a hell of a lot better looking than what they've put up on the front page of C&D, and that's exactly what I'm getting at. If some PS wizard can do that in an hour, why can't an entire design department make something nice to look at?

But the "PS wizard" didn't do much. Most of the design is pure DB9. Look at the original image. All the photoshopper did was make the front end look like a Mustang. They didn't even come up with a proper shut line for the hood. The original DB9 shut line disappears mid-way down to the front of the car.
I'm not trying to flame you or get you riled up. If you don't like the look of the new Mustang, fine. But to honestly think "this should look more like a DB9 with a different front end on it" is a bit unrealistic, IMHO. You could buy 6 Mustangs for the price of a DB9.

Except the Mustang GT asks the M3 who's its daddy is, to say nothing of the Boss 302.
And the IRS only means it gets better at the side to side business.
The Mustang stopped being about straight line since the 09 release, and they've always dabbled in truly lethal handling cars in the Cobra Rs.

I absolutely love the Boss 302. It's really a shame that they're ~$40,000 dollar cars still, but it shows what can happen when the right parts come together. Mustangs need to go on a diet.

I'll reserve final judgement for real photos, not distorted pics of a magazine.
My initial reaction though? It's more or less what we saw from the most recent renders. Overall I like it quite a bit, but the rear end looks off. I don't like the angles of the rear from the sids profile and from straight on it looks like it's missing something.
I HATED the S197 when it debuted because I was in love with SN-95s at the time. Now the S197 is among my favorite Mustangs, especially the 05-09.
I'm very pissed that it leaked though. I wanted to first see it when it was officially revealed.

Fair enough, but they really tried to push how "international" it was going to be, and besides, a V8 in a small car is what the pony/muscle car idea is all about, right? If they could get the car under 3000 lb with that V8 and keep the price reasonable, they'd end up with well under 10 lb/hp for 35k!

You know, I don't really like it. As a Mustang owner and a big fan, it's not everything I hoped it would be. Something just seems... off. Like there's a small sports car tucked in there and it's wearing a fat suit. It seems to have the same gaping maw and bumped up hood as most other cars destined for European markets, due to their ridiculous
pedestrian safety regulations
. And the beltline is TOO DAMN HIGH. I will say that the rear end looks great. But overall, it's kind of meh IMHO. Hopefully that will change when I see it in real life. But I'll still be picking up a 2011-12 5.0 in the spring.
I was hoping for something closer to this -

I think the whole "international" thing is more symbolic than anything, especially with the One Ford directive they've been trying to push. There were talks of Europe-specific Capri coupe for the longest time, but low sales projections means they don't get their own car. At least they get something. The primary market is in the US, and they're not going to stray too far from that, but hey, the next one gets 200lbs off, which is huge considering all the modern trappings cars come with these days.
Also sub-3,000lbs V8 sports car? What are you smoking? Who makes and sells such a car? That's a Ferrari you're describing, not a Mustang!
Supreme Kiwi Zorro

I really like the 70s Capri! (and the 90s one, too) Yeah I totally wish the Mustang was more like that. In fact, I think the Capri should've replaced the Mustang when it first came out (69 in Europe, finally came over here in 71, and the 69-78 Mustangs weren't their most awesome years)
The FRS and BRZ are about 2600 lb. A few hundred more pounds with a bigger engine like a V8 would take it to like 3000 lb.
Also, the outgoing Mustang is about 3800 lb with its 400-something hp V8, which is under 10 lb/hp for under 35k.
I don't think any of the hardcore Mustang people would complain about an FRS-sized Mustang as long as a V8 is available.
Yeah I know only Ferrari makes 3000-lb V8's right now, but I was trying to illustrate how possible it might actually be.
Pessimippopotamus
> dogisbadob
12/03/2013 at 21:05 | 0 |
There were some aftermarket tuners who fiddled around with Saturn Sky/Pontiac Solstice AKA Opel GT and stuck a V8 in there, but I'm pretty sure car manufacturers don't want to be responsible for such an insurance liability.
I'm actually certain hardcore Mustang people would complain about a Toybaru-sized Mustang. A huge portion of Mustang owners (pretty much all V6 Mustang owners and many GT owners) use it as their daily driver, and they would probably hate to lose rear seating (that can fit adults) and spacious trunk. They don't want an FRS. They want a Mustang. Hell, some people want a Mustang over a Corvette, and pay Corvette price for a Mustang! But hey, I'm all for Ford making a lightweight sport coupe. It just won't be a Mustang.
