Would You Consider These is a new feature in my kinja, because there's lots of weird Indonesian Domestic Market Cars Sold in here, and i want to know how do you guys from outside of indonesia think about one of these. So here's the first car, the Chevrolet Estate.
Chevrolet Estate is a wagon made by daewoo, based on the lacetti, to satisfy indonesian need of cheap, practical wagon. Buts sold as a Chevrolet. This car was quite cheap, price starts from 16,500 dollars for a base, 5 speed manual model. There's only two option. The SS pack (1,500 bucks, gives you a 17" rim and 3 TVs), and automatic transmisson (2,000 bucks will get you an ancient 4 speed auto.)
The engine was 1.6 liter inline 4 petrol, producing 110 hp. But it has good mpg, about 37-40 mpg in a good day, because it was small. Plus, despite it's quite a good looking, Chevrolet only able to sell 500 of that thing during it's shot lifetime between 2005-2008, so it's a rare sight on the road. And it;s reliable as well, and parts are plenty and easy to fix, because it's not having too much computers in it.
So, a 16.5k cheap manual estate from korea badged as a chevrolet, if that thing goes on sale in your place, would you consider one of those?

I like wagons...this not so much. Also I believe this is the Suzuki Verona in other markets.

Would I? It's based on the last-gen Chevy Optra (also the Lacetti), isn't it? With importation and excise taxes here (which pretty much means doubling the price AGAIN), I'd be looking at 90K RM. I don't think I'd regularly need to lug big things around, so I'd probably be looking at a CKD Polo, but if I absolutely had to... maybe.

Damn you, chevy!
Everyone else gets a proper wagon, but we get this. MAXXimize space with the minimum amount of space we could possibly add to the platform. I bet is not even longer than the original four door. What do we get now? NOTHING THATS WHAT!
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:45 |

Yeah...cars like this are probably why there's no more suzuki in the US anymore.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:45 |
|
Yep, it is.
But i think the estate is the only wagon in indonesia that you can buy (new) for less than 40k.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:46 |
|
Well, it has the same length as daewoo lacetti from top gear.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:47 |

When you say 40k...do you mean 40k US dollars or local currency?
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:48 |

what is this sacrilege in the form of an SS badge?
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:48 |
|
Yep. It even have the same parts.
90k rm is quite expensive to be honest. But still, it's a wagon.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:49 |

Yeah they made some crap for a long time. Great bikes...crap cars. I begged them to make a GSR version of the Kizashi (that was a pretty decent car). Turbo, AWD, 6MT it would have been a bargain S4!
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:49 |
|
Yep, that the one with SS pack.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:50 |

40k usd.
in local currency, that means about 400 Million Rupiah.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:51 |
|
what does that translate to? It is a fairly sharp looking wagon, but does the SS perform better?
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:51 |

Holy shitballs stuff is expensive down there. What does a new VW GTI run?
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:54 |

As a wagon-spoiled European I wouldn't. But I imagine it can be quite attractive in markets where there are few other wagon options.
It looks a lot like the (Korean) Chevrolet Nubira we got, 2005-2010. I think that Nubira was larger, although I'm not sure.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:56 |

Quick google lookup reveals it's 619 Million Rupiah. Or 61,9k USD.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:59 |
|
Well, that's the same car.
Honestly i really jealous with Europeans when it comes about wagons.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 08:59 |

So that is like 62 grand USD give or take...do you have insanely high import tarrifs?
![]() 12/03/2013 at 09:00 |
|
No.
It just come with better wheels, 3 more tv, and that's it.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 09:06 |
|
Yes it is.
I think it's about 200% or so.
But on the plus side, we can import anything that we wants.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 09:08 |
|
Hmmm I dunno what is better, normal tarrifs with restricted import laws or crazy tarrifs with lax import laws. I mean unless you are filthy rich you can't really import anything good.

On the same platform (if I'm not mistaken) we got the Opel Vectra, including wagon, and the Opel Signum. Both available with a V6 turbodiesel 6MT. V6 turbo gasoline 6MT 250 hp as well (280 hp max on Vectra OPC). And lots of i4 gas/diesel options. Both considered as very unanimous cars here. The Signum was a slightly upmarket hatch/wagon hybrid and a sales flop, the Vectra was more basic for European standards, but certainly nicer than the Malibu. Both were replaced by the Insignia (Buick Regal)
![]() 12/03/2013 at 09:10 |

And before that, wasn't it the Daewoo Nubira?
![]() 12/03/2013 at 09:11 |
|
I believe you are correct sir. The history of this crap-wagon is a long one.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 09:14 |
|
Well, that's true.
Unless you wants old cars like R32 GT-R or Suzuki Capucino, the rest is waaaay beyond your reach.
Like RS6 Avant, that thing in here retails for 4.2 Billion Rupiah.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 09:15 |
|
So that is like 420k USD...insane. Do people make Trillions of Rupiah?
![]() 12/03/2013 at 09:17 |
|
...So we(U.S.) did get the 'catastrophic understeer' car?!
![]() 12/03/2013 at 09:21 |
|
Some people did.
But most people is well, not really.
Most of us is happy enough to made 5-10k per month.
*Altough i have two friends that owns RS6, one is a racing driver, another one is a coal buisnessman.

I can't watch video at work. I do have to add that both Opels I just posted are a lot larger (+20 cm wheelbase) than the Indonesian market Chevy wagon Aya posted. The wheelbase of the Opels just happen to be the same as the Malibu Maxx, as they're both on the extended GM Epsilon platform.

The SS pack (1,500 bucks, gives you a 17" rim and 3 TVs), and automatic transmisson (2,000 bucks will get you an ancient 4 speed auto.)
lol. SS=Super Sport... Some wheels and TV's definitely makes it sportier.

Nope. It was called the Suzuki Forenza in the American market, and it replaced the Daewoo Nubira. Above is the Verona, which replaced the Daewoo Leganza.
The Suzuki Forenza was also known as the Buick Excelle, Chevrolet Lacetti, Chevrolet Optra, Daewoo Nubira, Daewoo Lacetti, and Holden Viva in other markets.
