Should F1 pull a page out of the America's Cup rule book?

What am I suggesting?

"He who wears the crown, makes the rules"

Regardless of what people say...Larry Ellison was right, more people watched The America's Cup this year than in any previous year. It was also really interesting hearing about the espionage and R&D each team was trying to develop/protect.

The naysayers say the changes and associated cost limited the competition and ruined the sport. It's true, there were less competitors but there was more buzz then ever before. In F1, the costs wouldnt be an issue in the same way it was for sailing, there's way more resources available and we'd be changing just one rule or aspect of the car.

Today they just tried banning all the cool features which make cares go faster.

Wouldn't it be a lot cooler if the champion got to implement a rule change referring to the car? i.e. back to V10's, turbo 5 bangers, unlimited DRS use, Traction Control (looking @ you red bull team), etc.

Really just an idea but just think it would be very cool to alleviate Sebastian Vettel's concern about the sport "losing excitement".

What do you guys think?

This is actually a great idea. The FIA is full of crap. This would certainly spice things up!

That would be awesome! Extremely expensive, but awesome!

I like the idea. It can make things very exciting in some aspects. Serious innovation in many ways that would be guaranteed to make it into production cars because too many people would see it working and winning, go to the dealer and scream "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!" Case in point, the Ferrari's with the first paddle shifters.

I remember when GM took a C4 ZR1, added active suspension and let her rip. It never made it to production because it was too cumbersome and complicated back then.

20 years later and you could probably run something much more efficiently on a street car and a lot faster with current computer technology. You wouldn't need as much input from active stability control/management if you had full body roll/yaw control.

I would love to see them make it a clean slate each year. It would probably cause engineers to age 20 years in just an offseason though.

It would of course really let the engineers cook up some crazy stuff. Hell, look at the prototype car for Gran Turismo by Newey himself. Over the years, F1/FIA has closed the net on a lot of loopholes that had allowed for very unique/interesting designs. Now the teams are having to work in the miniscule details as seen in the vortices of the Red Bull vs. Ferrari.

Nope.

F1 and the FIA won't see serious change till the dinosaur known as Bernie croaks.

The man is out of touch with what makes racing interesting.

idk... a team on a wining streak could develop a v-10 or whatever, then once they won the season implement the change, and already have a years worth of R/D while everyone else caches up. So they would win the next season, and do something similar. All i see is more redbull dominance.

How is Bernie still in charge despite bribery charges?! In my tiny little world we call America, you're fired if someone brings charges against you for anything. Hell, you could have eczema and get fired just for that. So why can't Bernie be fired for being a "dinosaur" and "not being in touch with what makes racing exciting"?
