If my younger cousin is any indication, discouraging the relationship will drive them closer together (he was a royal asshole, dumbass, deadbeat, jobless asshole, asshole). So I'd always inquire about him in a friendly manner, which I could tell she appreciated. Unfortunately she needed to figure out on her own that he is no good and she did.

At the end of the day, I can't pretend to know what I'd do if I had a daughter, but I might some day find out. Haha.

You see you are approaching it from the wrong point of view, it's not that you need to convince her that she can't date him. It's that you need to explain to him that if he wants to date your daughter he either needs to:
A.) Straighten up or
B.) Leave.

If he doesn't want to leave then explain how sometimes accidents happen…

Do this while cleaning a gun, that's what my dad did. Worked out real well, some boys never came back and the one that did is a very good provider for my sister and loves her very much.

I constantly remind my daughter about this scene. She laughs and knows it's all in good fun, but she definitely knows there's nothing I wouldn't do for her.
