They should have just used a normal E30. But, at least it's not a 2jz

I'm really not a fan of LS swaps into unrelated cars, especially ones that had interesting engines to begin with.
I'm sure it's absolutely bonkers to drive, but it just strikes me as the easy way out. There are tons of HiPo BMW engines they could have used, or even tuned the stock S13.
It's not even as if they're really strapped for cash so that was the only way to get power. E30 M3s are bloody expensive now.
Also, why an M3? Why not take a boggo 316, or whichever was the lowest spec E30 the US got, swap an LS into that and add flares and better suspension. Same result, but you don't significantly change the character of a car that was pretty damn characterful to begin with.
Grumble grumble, get off my lawn :)

I love BMWs but I don't mind this. According to the seller it was a rusted tub that sat in a field for 15 years. Other options at that point would have included sending it to a recycler to be made into new cars.

As a counterpoint, the seller does mention that the car was a complete heap that was sitting in a field and rusting away when he got to it.
