Movie making secret: To get those closeups of the actors, have a engine that actors could randomly wrench on, etc, they would gut the car (or build it onto a chassis) with a VW beetle motor in the rear. That's the vent for the intake. Very basic.

Don't know, but it's a common practice. Also, I think I have found my hollywood dream job, building crazy bug-powered filming chassis out of modern cars. I get to keep the leftovers.

thanks.. A bit of a reflection of my weird ways in that I would prefer IRL the underpowered movie chassis car with the vw motor, in tune, perhaps. Too bad they weren't street legal.

I don't think I ever noticed the roof scoop until watching it recently because I was like 12 when I first saw the film. I just assumed it was a go-fast bit and ignored it.
