...and I wasn't even driving. No worries, my gf (driving) and I are okay, just a couple scratches. It's a bit interesting how this happened just the day after Paul's own accident. On a slightly different note though, airbags don't hurt as much as people make them out to. Felt a bit like getting hit hard with a pillow. Unfortunately we forgot to take pictures of the car before it was towed away...

Airbags can hurt pretty bad. They don't always deploy in full force/velocity. The car makes split second decisions, and assesses the situation. It decides what airbags to deploy and how hard. Also depends how hard you yourself hit them.

yeah airbag to the face is SIGNIFICANTLY more pleasant than some of the other options, though my encounter with that particular device did wreck my glasses... but not my face, so I'm OK with that.

Airbag to face > Steering wheel to face.
Though the days I go in for physio I often think if we shouldn't find something a little softer and more generous with absorbing that kind of force

I'm very happy that you and your gf made it out without needing a hospital visit.
Make sure you take care of yourself, as sometimes you don't feel pain until a day or so afterwards. If something starts hurting, go see an MD.
Insurance will cover the stuff. Take care of yourself and your gf first.

Yeah, cool there wasn't a worse impact in this case...but they can be vicious. My wife has been in two incidents where they were deployed. Impact broke her ribs in one and concussed and caused vertigo(among muscle damage) in the other. Obviously better than the alternative, but hardly "soft pillows" in either case.

That'll teach you two about the perils of roadhead. Never do it. Especially if you're not the one driving!
(Just kidding, man. Glad you made it out okay.)

They can be, but imagine the alternative. I'm thankful they are there, but they can be very dangerous. For this very reason, your car will not deploy front airbags if you're not wearing your seatbelt. If there is no seatbelt to slow you down, you will hit the steering collumn much faster. If the airbag deployed then, it would break your neck.

Patent a device which deploys soft, well-fed kittens.

2007 Scion tC.
we were on the turnpike, she was driving and I was working the iPod, a good song came on and she looked down to turn up the volume and veered into the rumble strips, freaked out and overcorrected, fishtailed a couple times trying to regain control and ultimately slammed into the median concrete barrier. Airbags went off and we bounced back to the exterior shoulder. Fortunately we didn't hit any other cars or anything. I was very surprised by how calm and collected I stayed throughout the whole thing, that definitely helped her calm down a bit when all the dust settled.

Wow. On the NJ turnpike? What area?
That really could've been a lot worse.
