Just listen to this! A bit much for every day, but if an exhaust bypass valve sounds half this good I'll be happy.

...I've sent them bottles of wine apologising before. That was for starting the Jag with only the headers on (it's thunderous).

I definitely think this chap's car is a bit loud for a daily, but with a cutout valve you can have the best of both worlds.

You could get a GTV6 with the 12v version of this engine. Arguably, they sound even better.

"A bit much for every day"

"A bit much"? As in "too much"? You'd prefer a worse sounding car?
Gee, you must be insane. Keep it as is and then enjoy pissing off the E36 pricks.
(Although ironically you own an E36 yourself, but you've also got a 156 and a Spitfire so you're definitively not the type of BMW owner I had in mind)

Good point :) my plan is to get a good stainless system and then weld in an exhaust bypass valve . That way I can have my gorgeous racecar sound without pissing off the neighbours (not something your average E36 prick would consider).

If your neighbours get pissed off by the sound of an Alfa Romeo V6, even a later series unit, they've got a chronic case of bad taste in soundtracks. But it's a worthy concern nonetheless.

I would do a full exhaust, but get some good resonators and a muffler. This will help a lot with the tone and keeping noise levels down when normally driving.

Dear god that sounds amazing! I can't wait to do an exhaust on the Dart. The little Fiat FIRE engine needs to breath and be heard.

I've heard good things about Ragazzon, and SuperSprint does some good systems too. I haven't heard either in real life though, which would be good before paying through the nose to get them.

Just in case you thought otherwise, this isn't my car. Mine's got a rather cheap stainless system and more tasteful wheels.

If you really have the money, you could always get a Kreissieg. Although for my car their catback was about 4K. Or more than twice what I paid for changing the whole exhuast out.

Holy shit, that's a lot of moula for an exhaust. I wonder what theirs does that others don't. If it's not some really clever stuff with exhaust scavenging then it's not worth it.

This is nice and raspy with an angry upper register. I like it!

I love a good sounding exhaust! I know exhaust systems typically don't add much power, but the sure do make driving the car a lot more fun.

I was just at my body shop on Thursday to pick up my car (hail damage from a storm this summer). It wasn't quite ready when I arrived, so I was waiting patiently. I've got a 3" cat back on mine and about 20 minutes later... BRRWHOOOooooMmm. The guy at the desk look up at me and said; "Your car is ready." I just grinned at walked outside to grab it from the tech. Good times....

Anyway, here is a set of pre-post video's I did for fun. I went a little more subdued on my exhaust as it is my daily. That said, I could learn to love the exhaust note if it sounded like the one in the video.

Well they do work magic on some of their high end cars, plus they have a valving system, but it routes it though the pipes. Is it worth it for the performance gains. . . no, the sound, well probably not. Uhhhh, basically don't buy Kreissieg unless you are super duper rich.

I absolutely agree about exhausts. They usually only add a couple of horsepower (unless it's my heavily silenced Jag, in which case it's between 15 and 20), but they add so much more character. Plus, there's a marked difference in the way an engine gains and loses revs, which is excellent.

Alas this isn't mine. Mine's got a fairly cheap (but still quite nice sounding) stainless exhaust and more tasteful wheels. I'm planning to get a good mandrell-bent system with an exhaust bypass valve for race-car noise when I want it. I plan on having a 'loud' button somewhere inside to activate it.

This is mine (when the exhaust separated just after the cat):

A valving system inside the pipes is very clever. There's a muffler company in Australia that does something similar actually inside the muffler itself. They're not actually all that expensive for how sophisticated they are, but they're on the other side of the planet.
