I just got a reply on a post that is over two fucking years old. Who does that? Do people have a time machine or how do they even find these ancient articles?

There's the time machine of "Related Articles" on front page. It seems to have the desired "effect".
Alternative explanation: Kinja.

I'm assuming google, although they may be rooting through old articles.
I don't really see the issue with it. It's interesting to see what I was talking about back then, and how it's different to what I talk about today.

It's not that I have an issue with this. I was just wondering who would comment on a thread that has long gone cold.
And yes, it's a nice reminder of the olden times.

I imagine it's usually people who follow the link from some other website that referenced the old article, and when they got there they didn't realize how old the article was and thought it was still current.

If I open a few posts in different tabs, one of them links to an old article, I open that too, but don't get round to reading it immediately, it's easy to get distracted and respond to a comment. Although usually I notice it's an old one before I actually hit post.

Good point. It's a bit like resurrecting a dead thread on an old forum.
I have the sneaking suspicious that I may have done this when I first came to Jalopnik. I explained to someone that most Audis are FWD and AWD, rather than RWD and AWD. No idea how old that thread was.

I'm a time lord, but even I don't do that.

I really want to recommend a dozen of someones incredibly old posts, then post some clickbait post. Then people will start clicking on the 'RECOMMENDED BY BIRD' posts. That way someone suddenly gets replies and recommends on all of their oldest posts.

Happens to me pretty often actually. I always wonder as well.
