Show up with a battery. Swap it on the spot. If the car turns on and fires up, buy it. If not? Leave and take your battery with you.

If it doesn't start right up, GTFO before it explodes.

I have yet to hear someone say a bad thing about these cars. It's nothing but 'oh I used to have one of those. Great car, loved having it. It's a real shame I sold it'.

A $600 dollar car is a $600 dollar car, whether it's an Alfa or a Toyota. It's going to need a bit of work. The way I see cheap car purchases is that if they're an easy fix that's a bonus. If they're not then, hell, they were dirt cheap.
