Kinja'd!!!

My car was back in the shop getting the last of the hail damage taken care of. The rental agency was "kind" enough to give me a brand new 2014 Chevy Sonic sedan. It was underwhelming (more on that in a different post).

The Sonic had all-season tires and we’ve had a few dumps of snow recently. Combine that with temps approaching zero (Celsius) during the day and -5 to -10 at night and you’ve got the perfect storm to confuse the bananas out of the Sonic’s T/C. Even better, it doesn’t fully turn off (at least not with a simple press of the squiggly car button).

Kinja'd!!!

So there I was, stuck in my driveway spinning the tires (well spinning a tire, the driver's front tire). I was trying to rock it back and forth, going from D to R (which is harder to do on a slushbox then I thought it would be) and praying to the Flying Spegetti Monster that the craptastic Hankooks would bite. No dice. After doing this for 30-40 seconds the car just died. RPM’s dropped to 0 and the engine cried no more.

She started back up, but I was confuzzled, I didn’t think you could stall an auto-box, at least not a brand new one anyway. Chevy taught me something new.

I've done it multiple times in late 90's early 2000's BMW's. They do not like to idle so they just decide to turn off.

I stalled my cruiser in Moab, super steep hill, I rolled back on it in low range in idle and it stalled out....weird stuff.

New transmissions shut the car off if you drop it into gear too fast. Prevents damage.

However on a 2003 Ford Taurus, Reverse bomb your heart out.

Also, disable the TC and stability system by pushing and holding the button for like 10 seconds or whatever, more lights will come on and the whole system will disable.

Ahh, that would explain it! Thanks! The Sonic is, thankfully, back at Enterprise and I've got my car back.

Future reference then haha.

I've driven so many, either at work or some other reason I don't want to discuss on public forum.

But the Turbo one can scoot when you wind the hell out of it.

For sure. I asked if they had the turbo, no luck. Only base models for rental agencies. It did have sat radio though, that was nice.

I stalled my old monte when I drifted a very wet hairpin at an AutoX. I was on the banking of an oval and dived into a steep left hand hairpin and the back got out from under me. I almost saved it by hitting the gas but the back end kicked out a bit too far and dragged the wheels backwards. The trans didn't like that so I stalled out...Made it even worse since I had a girl in my passenger seat. Was not a very good day for me.

You have to hold down the TC button for 10 seconds to turn it off completely, at least in the 2013 version

I've done it in a 90's silverado

I stalled an auto before. I tried doing a burnout in my friends 85 745i, the MAF is called a barn door style where its a flap inside that moves up and down with the airflow. I did a brakestand but couldn't get a wheel to break loose, and right when I let off the gas and the airflow instantly died, the car died with it because it couldn't correct the A/F in time.

Thanks! I should have checked the manual, but at least I know for next time.
