What would you pay for a high mileage 2.5RS?
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
.
I've chatted with the seller about the "top end" rebuild. Claims it has a knocking sound but it starts, runs, and drives. Not sure if he means knock as in detonation, or something more serious like rod knock. Any NASIOC guys know any regular issues that sounds like this? Seems like it could be a good winter beater and ice racer with some work.

The entry point is perfect for a WRX/STI drivetrain swap.

Ahh a guy can dream. Unfortunately, the initial cash outlay to do the swap is not in the budget.

Im wary of this I can already see rust and I can only imagine the bottom of it. This would be great if you already had an engine to be swapped in with this and you can't go wrong with the sheer amount of part support for these cars.

"Top end rebuild"
I think that's Subaru noob speak for: Needs headgaskets. That, and these cars like to oil starve the #3 rod bearing, as its the farthest back(?) and once head gaskets are done (on the SOHC EJ motors they leak oil) the bearing goes to hell with its newfound oiling. Seen it happen multiple times.
But if you can talk the seller down to around $1,000, it's NP for a motor swap, and some body work if you wanna make it perfect.

Thanks, great stuff. Sounds exactly like the scenario. Apparently it had the HG's done by previous owner and is now making a mechanical knocking sound, which would confirm your suspicion of rod knock.

Buddy of mine has one that had about the same mileage on it when he had his HG's done. He took it to a specialist in Indiana, and on his way back to WI it started knocking.
He had the whole thing gone through and rebuilt (they had to add metal to the crank journal) and now has almost 300k on it.
Its funny, because his is silver too, but four door, and has a non-matching left front fender as well.

How does the headgasket replacement make the rod bearing go bad?

The way is was explained to me is that since the headgaskets leak for so long on just those back corners, and the #3 is the furthest back from the oil pump (I think) the bearing gets used to being under-oiled. Once you replace the HG's, and that bearing gets "proper" oiling, it overheats and eats itself up.
One of the joys of a boxer motor I guess.

I think that is not possible. I think running it low on oil because of the leak could damage the bearing and a false correlation from head gasket repair could happen.
There is a myth that replacing head gaskets on a high mileage engine damages the bottom end because of the renewed compression. When actually the bottom end was damaged by the overheating of the engine due to the blown headgasket
