There are varying degrees of luxury. It's all relative. Cars on the whole are a middle class luxury.

Middle class is already a meaningless, outdated metric anyway.

its true. Having driven one of these, I see what they were trying to do: quieter, fancier Prius and in that regard they did okay, but it gets worse mileage than a Prius and its not that much nicer. I guess if you don't explore niches you never hit the next SUV, but I'm going to say the luxury marque middle class price economy hatch as a niche to move on from. Rumor is they are trying again with more power and less eco. Here's hoping for the best.
