My sister needs a car for visiting my dad, she needs something cheap but with AWD to get up the mountainside that is his driveway in the winter.
I found this for $2000, AWD turbo 150000 miles, will it be horribly unreliable?

A Subaru Impreza with the 2.2 would be more reliable. You can find those in Imprezas up to 2001. Great little cars.

I believe non-turbos were more reliable, and 740s/940s/240s were generally more reliable, but don't quote me.

As an 850 owner I can say these cars are incredibly good for the money(comfortable, safe, pretty fast) until they break. If you don't want to have to pay for intermittent repairs( It is an old car at this point) buy an old Impreza or a Legacy wagon! Those things are the cockroaches of the automotive world, they just won't die!

Get a Volvo then, and a Volvo mechanic that you can become BFFs with. :)

I hate when people don't listen to my car advice so I won't be that guy, what about this? 2002 Impreza 2.5TS, 120000 miles $3500. I can't find any 2.2's locally.

Is this going to be a wintertime vehicle only? What about something like an S-10 Blazer? They're dirt cheap, and if had with an Eisenhower era 4.3 V6, they're cheap to work on. Might be a bit thirsty however.

yeah a cheap 4x4 F150 was my first choice, but I was told no trucks...

You are limited in AWD cars. Audi, volvo, subie, or special variant specials like a 323gtx mazda or celica all trac...both too special as beater type cars. So if reliability and easy maintenance is a goal, a early 00 subie is it...unless you play roulette with a volvo or audi repair bill. A nice 4.0 ranger/early 00 f150 truck or older sr22 tacoma is your other options if a small truck is optional.
