I'm not fond of this white stuff.

But, more important, it appears the starter finally took a dump. Tried to start it, to move it out of the garage so I could bring the Subies in, to change tires. Turned over a few times, with some sparks flying from the starter, tried a second time, had a big cloud of sparks, then nothing. I've been getting a click of the solenoid, but nothing else. Not turning over at all. I tried checking the wiring, everything looks to be in place. I checked the battery, I have a full charge. I tried touching a screwdriver across the points while trying to start, nothing except a few small sparks.

I'm pretty sure it's toast. Does any Miata owner, or any other Mazda non-rotory owner of the early 90's variant, have a used/spare starter lying around?

But, but, I thought Miata was always the answer. Or is it?!?

In retrospect, it definitely have been a different power source. Preferably of the BMW variant.

I probably do...is a 1.6 different from a 1.8? I might even have both...I can look for you sometime tomorrow.

Also, as a former BMW owner, trust me. Miata was the correct power choice. If you had picked a German mill, you'd be here asking for a part you can't pronounce and had only learned existed when yours broke...

Meh, I could machine it if I needed it. A S54B32 would be worth it.

Yes, from what I gather, Mazda conveniently grouped most of their cars together when it came to auxiliary parts. The starter shows up as both NA and NB in the junk yard searches.

Sorry it took me so long, but I do have one. Not in the best shape. Dirty and the solenoid ground is corroded, but worked when pulled.

Its yours if you want it. Email me your address and I'll send it to you.

Thanks a ton. I'll keep an eye out for it. I'm going to be driving the Seven as my resume when I go try to get a job where my buddy works. I think being a fab shop, they'll both respect the work, and the insanity meter reading, being an hour each way in the snow.
