Because I was asked to, here's the 944 that will soon be my new car! It's my Uncle's and he's selling it to me!(BTW I know what I'm getting myself into!)

Kinja'd!!!

Take a look at this clean, well-cared for 1985.5 944. It has 300k miles and has had constant service and upgrades during its lifetime .With a 2.5L Inline 4 Cylinder producing "163hp @ 5800rpm" and "151lbs/ft @3000rpm" according to the Ultimate History of Porsche book I own, this car will do 0-60 in about 8 seconds!

Kinja'd!!!

It's even got those lovely black Fuchs alloy wheels!

Kinja'd!!!

The interior is just fine for me, even with the dash cracks that are to be expected with classic Porsche's. A little bit of work and I think I can get it looking fantastic. It's even got the original Blaupunkt radio!

Now, for those that think the 944 is rubbish, too expensive to maintain and not worth owning. To those that think the only "real" Porsche is one with an air-cooled, rear mounted flat-six engine, think again. Sure, the 924, which was born out of an Audi/VW collaboration had it's faults, this car is a proper Porsche; real purists and fans accept the front-mounted water-cooled engine cars for what they are. And I don't believe Porsche fans should call themselves "fans" if they cannot realize this. Not sure why I went on this heated tangent, but I feel as though that had to be said.

Yes, it's true that these cars are very expensive to keep up with they may bleed your wallets dry; however, you must be prepared for that when you get one. Usually, some people think that these cars, which can be bought for cheap, don't need to be serviced to last forever because it's a Porsche. Quite the contrary in fact. if you treat them right, they'll last forever(or as long as you maintain them constantly).

Here's what I may be leaving behind for the Porsche though :(

Kinja'd!!!

This is my 2008 Saturn Astra; my first car. It's got 138hp and 125lb/ft of torque. At this point, I've only had it for 10 months and it's my baby. It's done so many things for me and it was there for a lot of firsts for me. I even put in this stone white REMIN dash kit to give it it's own personality. I'd hate to see it go, but what replaces it, will be so much more fun! :(

Kinja'd!!!

Any other 944/924/968 owners here? give me a shout!

I helped a friend restore a 924. It wasn't very fast, but it was great fun. A lot of people look down on these, but i know better. Plus, it's also beautiful IMHO (except for those american bumpers).

Thanks for posting. It may be hard on your wallet in the long run, but I doubt if you'll regret owning it in the end. I personally prefer the styling of the 928 (of the front-engined Porsches {to date}), but that's a clean-looking 944 you're getting. Enjoy!

Thanks! Surprisingly enough, both my parents are up for this. I also like the styling of the 928; for that matter, I wish I could own a 968 because it really dose bring out the best of the 928 and put in the 944 body style. However it's very hard to find a 968 these days and besides who doesn't love pop-up headlamps!

I actually don't mind the impact bumpers much. I think it's well integrated into the body that while it does stand out, it doesn't mesh with the design if you know what I mean.

I'd really love to keep the Astra. But the problem is that my mom drives a '99 Windstar(POS) and really needs a new car. Unless something else happens, It's already been agreed that we'll have to trade in the Astra and the Windstar to get my mom a newer car; and right now, I'm either looking at a 2003 Volvo XC60(she loves Volvos), or a 2009-12 Chevy Equinox I think.

They are well executed, unlike on some italian cars of the period. The 924/944 has clean lines, and since it's a wedge, it blends well with the bumpers.

Though the euro bumpers look much better...

You do have a point there. They used the euro bumpers on all of the US 944 Turbos and the '89-91 S2 models and it does blend much better with the body, that's for sure. I've been living with the impact bumper my whole life, that is to say every Porsche in my family has them so it's more nostalgic for me to have one with the impact bumper. Though having a Turbo or S2 would be nice... :)

Are you required by law to run the impact bumpers? Should be easy enough to swap them out.

Friend of mine owned a 944 turbo s for a (VERY) brief time. That is to say not even a full day. He drove over to us when he just got it and asked if we wanted a ride. He is a terrible driver, so we said no, but he insisted. So me and my friend got in the car. The dude can't drive. Nevertheless, keen on showing us how much he sucks at driving, he proceeds to do all the wrong things ... at high speed.

I warn him about the car and how it's going to bite him in the ass with no TC or driver aids and this much power. He laughs and insists that it DOES have TC. I say no, he says yes. 200 meters further up the road the rear breaks loose and he can't correct it so we hit the guard rail at 70 kph or so. The car spun against the guard rail, hitting all corners and collapsing part of the rear C pillar. Total loss. What a waste.

So i turn to the guy and say ... no, it does not have TC.

She owns a retail business and does shows to display her stuff at many locations. Preferably, she needs a car that can carry a lot of stuff(clothes, boxes, jewelry, gifts, ect.) from one place to another, and this needs to be done with good MPG in mind. The Astra offers great mileage but not the cargo capacity. The Windstar offers what she needs in the form of a POS mini van and she deserves better. I'm open to any opinions on a car that's no more than $15k that's a viable option.

Congrats! You are a true Jalop. I fully support your decision. The maintenance costs will be worth it because you love the car.

I love those Fuchs!!! And I love the color. The 944/968 was the last Porsche that looked good in red, IMO.

I hope you keep the car a long time and have a ton of fun in it. I have 911 myself and have mad respect for the 944. I would rather have a 944 from the mid 80s than a 911 from the mid 80s. I really really hope Porsche makes a new 944 one day. It can share some of its platform with other VAG cars and be slotted under the Cayman. It would sell like hot cakes and draw younger buyers to the brand.

I almost pulled the trigger on a 968 for $8000. Funny thing is I actually like the front of your car better than the 968. I like how the 968 looks during the day but the pop-up headlamps look kind of weird when popped up. I think your headlights look better when popped up.

Thank you that really means a lot as a first-timer on here. :)

I remember there being rumors a couples back about the possibility of Porsche reviving the 928. I think it'd be a fantastic idea. Even better, if they replaced that disgusting panamera with a brand new 928!

And you can't go wrong with the design of the 944/968 with it's flared rear-end. I'd say if it wasn't for Porsche's economic situation in the late 80s and 90s and if it wasn't for the boxster and future cayman, I think it would've been possible for the 944/968 to live on to maybe even now!

And Fuchs FTW!!

I agree completely. In fact before you mentioned that the 968s popped out, I didn't even think that they had that ability. It doesn't really look that good to me. The 928 does it better IMO. The 924/944s are much more form fitting and fit the design better too IMO.

Kinja'd!!!0

You're welcome! I've been reading the new 928 rumors anytime they come up. I really feel that it's only a matter of when, not if Porsche will do it. It just seems to make way too much sense to bring it back. They could base it off the Panamera platform but make it shorter and lighter (and better looking). The R&D won't cost them that much. They could sell each version of it for more than the respective version of the Panamera. It will already be a bit lighter so the power to weight ratio will be better, plus they can tune the engines so that the coupe has a bit more power than sedan. The 928 Turbo S will be a an expensive monster and rich people will buy it.

The flared rear-end of the 944/968 is awesome. And you can store all kinds of stuff in the back. I think they could sell a new one for less than a Boxster and still make money. It would be 4 cylinder only. And they could make it MT only, no PDK or slushbox. It could be a no-frills sportscar like the BZR/GT86. Except it would be a bit pricier and faster.

I think there is definitely room to have a more affordable sports car. I was at the LA Auto show last night and they had a loaded Cayman S for $98K!!! That's just crazy! I leased my 997.2 Carrera when it was a year old. I have the window sticker and it was $88K brand new, with NAV/Bluetooth/Heated Seats/Power Seats/Bose. Prices have gone nuts recently...

I want Fuchs for my car. But I can't find them :/ The Sport Classic had them but it has a wider track in the back.

Aw come on don't hate on the Windstar. My parents had one until it became too expensive in terms of road tax here in the netherlands, since road tax is weight based and the windstar weighs 1900kg bone dry. Sure, it is thirsty, handles like a turd, isn't very good on choppy roads with the beam axle in the back, and the interior fit and finish is just awful. But, the main criteria on which to judge a minivan is space and passenger comfort on the highway. And on those two points, the Windstar delivers in spades. The seats are very good and even the rear bench is quite comfortable. Much better than Espaces or Voyagers. It's also larger than both the Espace or the Voyager. It doesn't require much in terms of maintenance, and it's also quite good looking as far as minivans go.

Have there been any more rumors recently? I think basing a new 928 off of a panamera platform sounds brilliant and I don't think R&D would be much either. I don't know about it being a 4-cylinder though. They could use the new v6 they just added to the base '14 panamera and use a v8 for the top trim level. I also think there wouldn't be much of a problem using the PDK in it either, the original came with the option of a 3 speed auto, so for the lazy driver it'd be perfect! They could call it the 928 GTS-2!

I thought the farms was suppose to be the entry level Porsche sports car. Fully loaded cayman for $98k?? I could by a 911 with all the options I need for $100k! What's going on with that? And I'd still take the 911 over the cayman, regardless of its mid-engine, perfect handling, cargo cap and whatnot.

I was actually thinking, if you could take classic Fuchs and put them on a new 911 or cayman/boxster but that may seem a bit juvenile haha!

There have been some rumors. Nothing even close to concrete that would make it seem like the car is coming soon. But it could happen eventually:

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/porsche-9…

The 928 would not be 4 cylinder, it would share engines with the Panamera. I was referring to a future 944 replacement being 4 cylinder, just like the original.

It's crazy that a loaded Cayman S can be so expensive. The base Cayman is affordable if you don't get any options. But it can get up there in price too.

Haha the original Fuchs would be so small on a modern Cayman/Boxster. My old man has an 82 911SC and the wheels are so much smaller than they are on modern cars.

It's not that I despise it with a passion. We've had so many recalls in the states, and a lot of problems with ours. I also think it's a good looking car, along with its successor, the Freestar. It's just that now it seems as though we're spending more money to keep it on the road when we could simply by a newer car. I've spent my entire life riding around in our Windstar. It drove me around from elementary to high school(until I got my car). I even failed my first driving test in it!(the oil light came on before I started haha!). It too is one of those cars I hold dear to me. But given the times and how technology has advanced, it's time for a replacement. I do respect you and the other owners of Windstars and often think of my own when I see one. I just don't see it as economically feasible for my mom to have to keep driving it when there's plenty of better cars on the market now.

I kinda like that design. But I still prefer the original "boxy" look of the classic 928. In fact I think if they did to the 928 what they did to the 944(flared rear and other things) it'd be perfect.

I actually like bigger tires and small wheels compared to big rims/slimmer tires on Porsches; seems a bit more classy to me. My dad's '74 911 has the good ole cookie cutters which they should definitely bring back!

I talked to her about it a while back, she's not a fan of its boxy design. I personally don't mind it, but it's her car. I'm thinking of cars for around $15k or less with good mileage, and the cargo capacity of a minivan; the catch is, it can't be a minivan! I was thing Ford Edge or Chevy Equinox but she loves Volvo and BMW so something like those would be perfect.

Who knows what it might actually end up looking like. I'm sure however it looks it will look better than the Panamera! The only Panamera that I really like is the wagon concept. I think it looks so much better than the fastback:

http://www.caranddriver.com/news/porsche-p…

I think the big rims with super low profile tires have gotten out of hand too. I have 18" wheels and they have so much more meat on them than the new cars do. My ride quality would be terrible with 20" rims because I don't have PASM and the 997 chassis is a lot harder over bumps than the 991 is.

That's cool your dad has a '74 911. I wish my old man's car was from the first half of the 70s instead of the first half of the 80s. His car is cool but I like the earlier models better. The 1974 car had the more elegant bumpers.

I checked out the video and you know the rear bumpers do look the same. I couldn't see the front bumper in the video. The reason I thought they looked different is because I Googled 1974 Porsche 911 and saw a pic that wasn't from a 1974 car. Now that I looked into it in more detail it seems like the classic bumpers went until 72 or 73?

I would love to have one that looks like this:

Kinja'd!!!

I don't really mind the look of the 964 911 cars. Seems like a lot of people think the 964 was the black sheep of the air cooled 911s. Is it because of looks, performance or reliability?

Its been a long time since I had a 944 - almost a decade - but I remember some 944 owners on the Rennlist and Pelican Parts forums chose to put Euro-style bumpers on their cars because there were some issues with making a Turbo/S2 bumper fit. If I recall correctly, the Turbo/S2 had a wider front track than the base 944, so the parts would not fit properly.

Anyway, congrats on your purchase. My first car was a '85.5 944 and I loved it. I still miss it, it is the one car that I wish I had never sold. It also had Fuchs. Those wheels rock.

I wonder what it feels like. I've never driven a 911 with Tiptronic. I've driven PDK but that's different...

The only time Tiptronic almost made sense was in one of the 911 Turbos. It was either the 993 or 996 Turbo that was quicker 0-60 with the slushbox. I still would not have ordered the Tiptronic but at least it had that stat going for it.

6MT is the way to go with a 993. I've seen cherry condition later year 993 Carrera S cars for sale with the 6MT and low miles. Soo expensive. Like $70K expensive

Awesome. Yep still running. Still gotta do the timing belt though. Clutch should also probably be soon. Need to get her reregistered so temporarily off the road.

She's been decent! Love her.

Nice! thank you for the kind comments on mine. Yours looks great as well. I'm actually kinda jealous of your rear wiper. Must come in handy when it rains! ;-)

Have you been around Pelican Parts, Rennlist and 944online.com? Those sites are fantastic for your Porsche needs! you may even be able to find a good set of Fuchs wheels too! :-)

Yep I know those sites all too well.

Rear wiper is cool, but would be even better if my front ones worked.

I am a fan of Fuchs, but I also do like the set that came with my car. I am kinda looking for another set of wheels though, to put winters on. But that's low priority right now.

Yeah...I too understand how important front wipers are on a car. ;-)

Ah so you drive yours in the winter then. I'm planning on doing that as well. Tell me, do you deal with road salt and have to worry about corrosion of the underybody? If so, what steps do or did you take to remedy that?

And also this is my first car without ABS, Traction Control and a couple more of the amenities that some people usually take for granted in modern cars. How do you drive your 944 or when you drove it? Winter, Summer, rain or shine you name it. Also, no one seems to be able to answer this: can I adjust my ride height for winter driving if I'm still worried about underbody corrosion?

Aha! That's a clever name. And that's a nice-looking 911 turbo! And it's a Cabby! Loving the Fuchs on yours too. It's nice to see that not everyone has black Fuchs because the silver ones to me are hard to find as I don't see them often. Of you've got time, check out my rather sad post on a dilapidated 911 turbo by my house. In fact, you may have seen the same 911 in a previous post a while back(not sure how long though) and there's a rather funny and ironic reason as to why if you read into the comments.

And it really doesn't make sense does it? It's been sitting there more than 8 years! What owner leaves a 911, a turbo for that matter, without as much as a car cover, in the corner of a gas station to rot?? And if it doesn't run, and clearly they were doing absolutely nothing about it, why keep it? It's not doing them or the car any good.

Even though there's a possibility of making money if ya sold it. Logic just doesn't exist in this world anymore does it. And if it does, it was clearly given to the people that didn't need it. And that's why I love this site. A place where petrol heads, gear heads, car fans, enthusiasts, aficionados, and whatever else everyone calls themselves, can go to talk about, argue and debate things like this. This is better than joining a club. I don't think I've ever found another place like this in my life. It's like the Mecca of the automotive world online! I will forever thank DWHITE for introducing me to this site. It's simply fantastic!!

And you're right, we do have a responsibility. Whether or not people are up to the challenge is the real struggle here, and it's apparent that everyone on here is here for a reason. :-)

Now isn't that an uplifting speech about cars or what haha! I'm getting a tad bit preachy in my lack of sleep.

That's true. The running costs are high, but what better minivans are there? Here in the netherlands, there is the aging Espace, which is smaller and hasn't got as good seats. You've got the dreary VW Sharan and SEAT Alhambra. I can't think of any others currently offered here.

Kinja'd!!! K-Roll-PorscheTamer > Bluecold

That's exactly why we're not getting another minivan. We were thinking along the lines of an SUV this time around.

It's because she has no other kids that need to be driven and I'm the only kid actually. And I think that SUVs and another vehicles are much more flexible than minivans. The only two minivans I can think of here are the Chrysler town&country and the dodge grand caravan and they are literally the same vehicle.

I don't DD my 944 for commuting, but it is my only car and I would like to be able to drive it in the winter when necessary. I'm no too worried about corrosion on the underbody. My car looks like it was coated pretty well. But I also hear that it helps if you clean the underbody of the car after a heavy salting.

This is also my first car without ABS and all those assists. I think the way to go about owning and DDing a car without assists (this can also apply to cars with assists) is just to know the limits of the car and your tires, and don't push it from there. The most I pushed my car (grip wise) so far was two weekends ago on a Oppo meet up cruise. It handled well and I only felt it lose traction once. Roads were just a tad slick. It really helps if you have car control skills and know how to correct skids. As for ABS, a few weeks ago I tested that and attempted to safely performed an "emergency stop" in the wet. The car did slide forward, I was expecting this. I just don't try to put myself into situations where I'm going to have to brake that hard. My pads aren't in that great of shape haha.

What area of the country do you live in? Do you want to raise or lower your height?

I see. Well in my situation my uncle done all of the following to my knowledge:

Rebuilt steering rack
New Brakes
New Rotors
Engine sway/stabilizer bar I think. Or maybe it's called a strut bar.
Performance chip(not sure of the brand or type)
New tires
Fuel lines have been replaced(thank god. I'm still gonna buy extras just in case)
Proper/Constant service and maintenance has been done.
The ball bearings in something have been replaced( I think you guys know what I'm talking about.)
Timing belt and clutch have been replaced too.(not sure of how many miles ago but it's been done)
A couple other things too.

I live in Michigan, the giant mitten! We don't get that much snow as you guys do on the east coast, but it seems we always have the problem of excessive road salt laying.

Kinja'd!!! Aaron Brown > K-Roll-PorscheTamer
11/28/2013 at 12:39

Kinja'd!!!0

Sweet.

You're going to want to figure out when the timing belt was last done, because with these puppies, they're apparently supposed to be done every 30-40K miles. Yep.

As I get money, I will be able to do more things to the car. But for now I just need plates and need to get down and dirty to do the timing belt.

I'm thinking about other things I can do to the car as well. for now, I think my money will go into washing/waxing to protect the body and paint, consistent servicing and some TLC on the interior; trying to deal with and prevent the current and more dash cracks respectively. How's yours in terms of the interior?

I also see that you slipped a bit there in that video too. :)

Shiftings alright. Could be better. Like I said, I think the clutch is on its way out. Also my shift linkage doesn't seem to be very tight so the gear selector is very loose, even when in gear. Something I plan on fixing very soon.

I was young and got bored with it. At the time I wanted something more modern and something that had room for friends and road trips. In hindsight I really regret selling it. It had only 75K miles when I sold it and I had all the service records since it was new.

Have fun with your 944. They are gems. I really miss the perfect steering and handling.

Interesting. While I don't understand how anyone can get bored of a Porsche, I can understand the need for having something modern and having the ability to carry friends around. I was thinking about that before I asked for it, but then I realized something: It's a Porsche! I don't need to carry people around and if they need a ride find someone else haha! ;-)

Just kidding! but most of my friends have cars now so I usually only have 2-3 people total in my 5-seater hatch most of the time.
