Out of all of the things I checked before buying my S2000, opening the air box and checking the filter was not one of them. It turns out today that not only was my airfilter not the correct one, it wasn't even close to the right size, and was thusly just rattling around in there. Fixed that real quick, but man am I dumb.

I've done that, too. When I bought my '99 Taurus SHO I didn't check the air filter for weeks after I bought the car, when I finally did check it, the paper element had a big hole torn in it and the paper that was left was dirtier than I've ever seen a filter element in my life.

lol, i think ive got a close second. I never took the bumper/hood bra off to look underneath before i bought my car. I learned that lesson the hard way. We all forget the simple stuff sometimes when were super excited about the whole event.
I was worried you were gonna find a racoon or something made a home in there, or it had no filter at all haha.
