With the next WRX being made available with a CVT, this has opened the flood gates for all of the other Sport Compact makers to equip their vehicles the same way. It seems to be skipping over VW, but I can see Honda adding a CVT to the next generation Si, and the Sentra Nismo being the same way (after all, the last SE-R was CVT only). I have to say though, working at a Subie dealership, modern and sport-focused CVTs nowadays are a big step up over their past counterparts.
I still don't like em, but if it makes sporty models more readily available and brings more attention to the Nismo line or cars like the Si, it may have to be something the rest of us accept.

So long as they offer a manual option for the rest of us.

A CVT makes more sense than a traditional automatic does. I think Subaru did a good job on their CVT, for what it is anyway.
I'd rather row my own though.

That's pretty much exactly how I feel.

I think all of us enthusiast would also, but to be honest, I'd rather have a CVT than a regular automatic as well. Especially for some of these specialty engines and setups. Things like the Forester XT's ability to changed between 6 and 8 simulated gears based on mode and purpose will eventually become very popular and important once they become more prevalent and available.

lets just sum this up right here:
CVT's in auto mode blow
A well programed CVT with programed ratios as an alternative to a regular automatic is fine.
None are as good as a manual.
Truth is, its a very clever way to beat the CAFE system. dishwater dull for the testing, quick and accurate for the real world.

Wait, the new Civic Si will get a CVT? How did I miss this? Hasn't the Si never been offering in anything other than stick?
I drove a Sentra SE-R (with the CVT) ~5 years ago, and while it was fast (at least compared to what I was driving at the time) it just wasn't any fun to drive (and I drive an auto everyday). I just couldn't put my finger on it, the acceleration wasn't satisfying. I now know that it was due to the CVT (I was less car knowledgable back then).
I am mildly intrigued to see how the CVT in the WRX will do. Despite initially reading that the CVT will actually get worse fuel economy, I read that this is due to how Subaru is conservatively rating things so not to end up in a Hyundai debacle (I'm trying to find the source to that article).

It hasn't been available with anything but a stick, but I can just see them announcing that for the next gen. Since VW started making the GTI available with DSG, other makers have been scrambling to make autos for their sport compacts.
