This is not the busiest time of year for air travel. Weekends during the summer when none of the kids are in school are the busiest. Read some article debunking that myth... might have even read it on Jalopnik.

I commute to and from work every week just about (pilots do this) and I can tell you that on a weekly basis, the best days for travel are Tuesday and Thursday. That's when I find open seats. (Otherwise it's up front in the jump-seat for me) The business guys fly out on Monday mornings and come back on Friday mornings or nights. Wednesdays are for the business guys who finish early or families that get an early start on travel (schools let out on a Wednesday for mid-term or Holiday stuff). Try if you have to, to travel on those days during off peak months. Summer vacation starts in mid-May and goes until nearly Labor day. Right after Labor Day the volume of traffic dies down drastically until Thanksgiving week. However! Look out for the draw-down in flying by the airline. they will remove flights at the same time. This is also the case from New-Years until mid February when spring break starts, and then April till mid-May is pretty lax as well.
