For my photo class, i had to find a 'yellow submarine'. My watch in a pint glass did the trick i think.
still dont know which shot i like best....

The first one looks better, and follows the rule of thirds better imo.

Have anything you could use as a backdrop?

id agree. I got sloppy with the second because i was taking a bunch of shots with different exposures... Only reason id like it better is because the pint glass is in the whole shot.

Yup. Or a not too obtrusive pattern/texture so you can see how the water distorts it.

Either a solid background, or much more empty space behind. Shoot it at f/2.8-3.5 and the background will pretty much disappear.
Personally, I like the second shot better. The first one is too dark/not enough contrast for my liking. I wonder also what you could do to lessen the reflections on the front of the glass. Also, rigging a single light pointing straight down into the glass might be cool, too.

ill give a few of those ideas a try. Im working on getting either a 35mm or 50mm prime lense. im eager to try out an f/ lower than ~3.
Ill go back and reshoot this concept for sure.

I don't do much studio/portraiture at all. Most of my shooting is done outdoors at air shows, sporting or other events. I've got a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 that is great. Fast and sharp. I've actually never shot with primes, though I'd like to some time. Never really had the need to. If you get some more shots like this, toss them up on Photography . I'd like to see them.
