WAIT A MINUTE, Chrysler never had a 429. What is this?

I didn't even notice that! I saw the engine numbers on the hood but just thought they said 426. Research into this mystery will be conducted over beer, I assure you.

That didn't take long. This from a Dodge Charger forum:

"I asked Charlie that in September. He said that with the 7 liter maximum displacement rule, 429 was the most CI you could get and stay under the limit. Ford had the 429, and Ray Nichels (Charlie's car owner) didn't want to be "outdone" by Ford, so he sometimes listed the displacement as 429."

Google "Charlie Glotzbach's Daytona" and you'll find pics with both 426 and 429 on the hood.

I'm surprised that Dodge would allow that. I would think that even if they squeezed out another 3ci through boring and stroking, the car would still promote the 426.

I completely agree, that does seem strange that Chrysler allowed that.
