As much as I would like to think the Elise and the new 4C are epic cars, you can't hate on this thing.
Graduation is right around the corner …. could probably get one of these used for 35-40k in a few years, right guys? …. Right?

I filmed a review of a Cayman for another website, but we need to reshoot some of the bits and do a lot of editing. Bottom line, it's a pretty awesome car. For the money, I may have to go Corvette though. But I'm a V8 kinda guy.

If you read R&T's recent Performance Car of the Year article, it sounds like some of the magic of the first Cayman has been lost with the new iteration...

But with the Cayman I could tick the mid engine box and get that off my list to own. Also whenever I think of the 'vette my brain instantly goes to how much more I like the viper.

I've seen a few reviews where they straight up don't like the new steering, I'm sure that has something to do with it. But I've never driven the old cayman, so ignorance is bliss?

I honestly like the looks of the old one better, too. Just means that I'll be more than happy (when my time comes) with a 2009-13 and won't feel like I have to hold out for a 2014+!

Whenever I see a Cayman, I think man, they really wanted a 911 but had to settle.

I do for the base cayman, but when I see a cayman S with a stick shift and heavy duty brakes I think "This is a man who wanted a 911 without the extra 30k of unnecessary crap but still had 70k to spend on a toy"

Just spec'd a cayman S to $80,000 with only performance options (left the manual, $3200 more for a PDK). That's just a lot of car for a toy when you can get better performance for cheaper else where. Different strokes for diffrrent folks though. Not trying to hate. Just saying at the end of the day it's not for me.

Just from a chassis stand point I wouldn't get the 911. Yea I'm sure its great, just like the EVO's awd is great too … but it just bugs me that is started out in such a flawed way.

For sure, you pay a lot for it. But spec a 911 base model to a decent state and you crest 100k easy. Even more if you get the 911 S. Meanwhile if you want a highly evolved mid engined experience, the cayman can make some sense if you have the pocketbook for it. I also think you need some imagination.
Personally, if I was dropping 75-85k on a cayman S, I would have it done up in a classic Le Mans livery to celebrate it being MR. I looked at the color palette and I think that dark blue metallic or perhaps the silver along with the black wheels would be great if it was decked out like this:
Or get a red one:
Or be bold and get a white one and put some martini livery on it:
If I'm buying a toy, I will go full-on 12 year old and make it a toy car I can actually drive.

I hear you man. I'm also about to graduate, although I had a Camaro SS rental for a few days over the summer, so I've got my sights set on a nice 1LE when I get the money. You should get a Cayman, and someday we'll have a brute force vs. finesse autocross battle.

Haha I like it .... and that would probably be a damn good battle too. The 1LE from my understanding is good handling car.

That's what I'm hoping. I didn't get to really wring out the SS, but from what I could tell it was a solid handler, and the 1LE does a LOT to improve on it. Besides, you've heard what I can do with GM's fwd turds... ;)

Yes! Oh, by the way, since I have you here, and you haven't yet told me to get the hell away yet, I have a question that needs answering. How exactly does one gain the privilege of being able to post on Oppo?

Every few weeks or so, one of the admins (I think auto mach, jaguar, and arch duke) makes a post calling out new oppo people.
But you could probably just reply to this post and ask for author privileges. http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/welcome-new-op…

EDIT: maybe not that link because I guess auto mach isn't a moderator .. maybe this one? http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/a-general-hand…
