I'm looking to built my first nitro-powered plane from a kit. So far the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! looks like a good choice. It's supposed to be a good plane for a first build and to learn to fly on. Does anyone have any experience with these? I'd appreciate any tips you could give me.

Don't even try to tell me there is anything better.

Tried making one from scratch last year. Followed online plans and failed, ripped the plan in half and started over with my own design.

Took off from the ground on its own but the flaps and controls were calibrated waaaaaay too sensitive. Spiraled up about four times really quickly then nose dived from 20 feet. I have the broken plane (only front broke really) in the basement still. Maybe I'll fix it or maybe I will make something else.

Good luck, and have fun.

JayHawk Jake has been flying his RC plane lately... He converted it from IC-engine power to electric, IIRC.

As fun and realistic as nitro or gas powered flying is, the development of high efficiency brushless motors and LiPO batteries have put electric planes/helo's at the top of the list, IMHO... Quiet, clean, and frustration free... That makes for a better entry into the hobby these days...

I have a small helicopter I have been flying for the past 1.5 years... Fun stuff.

I flew one once when I was young. It was wicked fun!

My adult mind now things it would be even more to try to shoot one down with a roman candle while a friend flies. Some day I'll get around to it.

I havn't had my Carbon Falcon in the air in almost four years :( It's sad That AceSim RC discontinued the CF, as it's built like a stunt kite, is nearly idestructible, can fly slow, but is fast enough to be entertaining and looked cool to boot. I would have told you to buy that all day long if they still made it...

how much money gets you in the door these days?

This kit, plus an engine, radio system, and various tools, fuel, glue, paint, etc. would be in the neighborhood of $300. They can be had for cheaper, maybe 150-200 if you want to sacrifice a little quality and stability for a smaller model. Otherwise there are always electric, ready-to-fly options for under $100 but that sounds nowhere as fun.

I fly, and build ARFs. I'm all electric, and I've done two conversions. Idk anything about the PT-40, but I'd look into the Telemaster series from hobby-lobby.com. I've heard nothing but good things about them

My current active fleet includes:

Nitro planes Mini Pop Wing
Dynam Fanjet 500 twin edf
World Models Wingman 1 nicknamed the 'Believable Hulk', pushing way too much power on a 32 equivalent
Converted Tower Kaos 40 powered by a 46 equivalent

And the newest addition, my current queen of the fleet: a converted Ace 4-120 biplane: 15 pounds, IMAA legal powered by a tacon Bigfoot 160 pushing 2500 watts WOT

Depends what you want to do. You can get a decent beginner plane for less than $100 ready to fly, a good airplane would run about $200-$300 ready to fly, but radios will get you. A really good all around radio will be $150-$200 but works with multiple planes.

I fly all the time and have been for a few years, but yes I've been posting that big converted biplane. I'm having withdrawal from it right now...

You know what you need when you have the money? You buy a RC replica of the Predator drone. Now that will scare the hell out of some drone-free-skies activists.

Well, that is the old-school way of doing it. Personally, I don't think there's much reason to mess with IC engines these days.

What I'd do is buy a 4 - 6 channel RC unit straight from China at HobbyKing, also batterys, servos and a motor and prop, then fit up something like these:

http://www.3dfoamy.com/index.php?opti…

Despite the looks and abilities, these planes are *massively* tough and very easy to fly, and cheap, since you can easily repair or rebuild. Easy to get 5 - 10 minutes of flying then just switch batterys.
