What do I mean by "mass-restomod?" I mean similar to what the guys at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! do. I heard about these guys ages ago (I vaguely remember hearing about them restoring John Lennon's Jaaaaag, though I can't confirm this on Google) and they seem to do some amazing work, taking old beaters and going beyond their factory specs. More than their former glory, in other words. Check it out.

Of course it got me thinking ultimately to this QOTD - there has to be more than just XJs worthy of saving en-masse, and maybe even making for a great business case. Ideally something cheap and plentiful, but still undeniably classic. The most obvious results that came to mind would be the second gen Camaro (all the way up to 1981) and the 240z straight through to the first-gen 280z (that more or less kept the same lines of the original). Both of these cars can be had in great running condition for way less than $10k and parts (original, repops and upgrades) are as plentiful as peanuts. I'd imagine they can be flipped in the $20k-$30 range if restored on an efficient, professional factory-line setup. Yes, even the '74-'81 Camaros; if nothing else you can "clone" them into '70-'73 models - or not, since I rather think the poly nose, like Rocky IV, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

But I'm more interested in thinking outside the box. I'd also like to nominate the Mk 4 Jetta - I had one of these in base GL form and even then it was a zippy, fun car that felt faster than it actually was. With an upgraded stick, 4Motion and a VR6 with as many turbos as you can fit these have to be the ultimate autocross Q-Ship. Not to mention turning Lancers into Evos underneath the sheet metal.

But... still not outside the box enough. Hey, I know! Jalops have Panther love right? How about a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ?

Yes I'm completely serious. It was after all Motor Trend 's COTY that year. IMHO it's got the best lines of any generation Town Car - subtly smoothed yet still crisp edges and a certain polished and upscale look that sings, rather than screams money (especially compared to the "random sharp corners and finned edges everywhere" look of American luxo-barges in the middle and late Malaise Era). I think it could be the American equivalent of XJ Restorations.

Speaking of Lincolns the Mk III and Mk IV might make great candidates too. But what do you think? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Mustang II- Coyote, IRS, 6-speed manual, slight body mods along the lines of the King Cobra, better interior

Any Panther- Same as above, but keep the body stock, 9 inch rear, slightly lowered

Panther Party! It was the source of one of my previous posts:

I think that a garage that could pick up sub $2000 Panthers (any and all versions) and send them out the door as nice, reliable, and cool looking would make some cash. Yeah, that includes "murdering" some out, it sells. Especially around DC, the market would be ginormous.

Every time I see a cheap used one I want to stop and take a look. They'll go for 200K-300K miles, getting something that just needs some TLC and some cosmetic mods wouldn't be hard.

I've got a family owned since new (and my first car) mk2 Golf stored away for precisely this reason. I'll probably have a VR6 or modern-ish TSI engine plus GTI suspension installed a few years from now.

(Not the actual car, but identical including trim. Mine is silver though)

And thanks for making me look at that town car post. I now have something to hit the space bar with.
